NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

I agree with all posters who are sick and tired of all the negativism. I'd like to address this to the moaners and groaners... Let's get something straight, okay?
Nobody said this election was going to be easy. The MSM is not the whole enchilada they used to be but they are still a force (and a farce) to be contended with. There are more people who are taking advantage of alternative news sources than ever before, but still, there are lots and lots of people who are just plain lazy and want quick, watch-TV-and-get-on-with-it news. Now we all know that what they get on the Network Nightlys is anything BUT news and anything BUT the truth, but some people want the "easy fruit off the tree they can just pick." And they're still gullible and believe what Tom, Dan, and Peter tell them must be the truth or "they couldn't put it on TV"....So be it. Who knows how they'll vote? All I know is that sometimes you just have to ignore how bad things look and just keep plugging away. No, that doesn't come easy and it isn't natural, but that's just too bad.
What did you want? Bush to wipe Kerry out so badly that none of us would have to do anything for America but sit back in the easy chair then go to the polls and vote Repub on 11/2?
It seems like the minute we get in a hard battle, the negativists groan and pronounce doom. Some of you guys are sounding like entitlists. I know you may not mean to be, but just because we're on the right side of the truth doesn't mean the war is over or will be over any time soon. Wars take time and our "war" to turn the evil, despotic tide of hateful Clintonian Demo-madness is an ongoing battle. You can rest assured that the Dems -no matter how badly they fare in this election- are not going to give up. Politics and Socialism is their religion and they're single-mindedly determined to destroy this country so they can warp it into their own image. We may succeed in reducing their numbers in Congress and in some local and state elections, but they're not going away, regardless.
Not to sound ugly, but I look for the same gloom-and-doomers to get on here and mope even if President Bush DOES get elected and then an impeachment drive starts (and be ready for it, as crazy as the Demoncrats have become, it's probably going to happen if Bush is re-elected).
Look folks, moping is easy. Moping and griping and posting negativism may "shield you from disappointment" but what about the cause, the cause we're supposed to be in favor of? (And don't give me that "I'm only trying to be realistic" stuff). What good is it going to do us to be pessimistic? Here's a news flash: it's not November 2 yet, okay? There's a lot we can still do if we're willing.
Listen up everybody: I read Lisa Beamer's book. I'm pretty sure Todd Beamer was a conservative and most likely voted Republican. And even IF he wasn't, he still was part of a right thing being done that benefitted us. Now, you wanna talk about hopeless? And doom? What did Todd and those others do, just mope and give up? Thank God he and his fellow trapped passengers didn't, they fought back and possibly kept an airliner from hitting Congress or the White House.
Todd Beamer was more doomed than anybody reading this post and he didn't quit, he didn't whine, he and his fellow passengers fought back until the very end.
We need to keep fighting back, too, exposing the lies of the left and Freeping and doing what we do to make a difference for this republic. We owe it to Todd and every brave patriot who perished in Pennsylvania that fateful day three years ago to do that.
Stop moaning.
Stop whining.
Let's roll!

I am a member of my town's Republican Committee and worked at the polls for a few years. When we look at the voters list, we look at likely voters -- especially for the previous 3 or 4 elections. If all registered voters voted we would be in great shape. Take this poll with a grain of salt. Also, the Lowell Sun (Kerry's territory) endorsed President Bush in the Sunday edition.

"Are you surprised when the sun rises in the East?"

I'm confident the sun is going to rise in the east. Bush's reelection is another matter.

I agree. I was listening to Bob Brinker on "Money Talk" today. Someone called and was bashing Bush on his tax cuts to the "rich". Bob Brinker, who is a mild manner guy, blew up and explained those tax cut was to stimulate the economy. The plan behind it was to have those people take their tax cuts & go out & spend it thus stimulating the economy.

It was a simple response , but very effective. I just don't P. Bush doing that. I see conservative radio talk show host explainiing what he ment or adding to what he said to help explain, but I don't see Bush or the Republicans doing that very well.

I am voting for Bush, but like I said before I will be very surprised if he wins.

I think the third debate will the hardest of all for Bush. I wouldn't be too surprised if the Bush team wanted the first debate to be on foreign affairs as this should have been the strongest ground for Bush to play on. However things in politics never go how they should!

I fear that the subject of our nations huge budget deficit is going to be a huge issue in the third debate (which is on domestic policy)- something which as a conservative I hugely disapprove of. How Bush gets around this one is crucial......

I don't know. I go to DU and lurk sometimes. For one thing you need to know your enemy. But its more like watching a really scary movie with lots of blood and guts. You don't want to look but you just can't help yourself.

Different strokes. I know the enemy. Heard them, see them on TV news shows, read them in the news every day. So boring and predictable, not to mention foul-mouthed and wacko....I just don't waste the time.

Wait, wasn't Newsweek great when it showed the Prez in the lead? If we find that the methodology was off, fine, but let's not just dismiss it because "Ahem, it's Newsweak."

this from a Freeper: A sure way to get Kerry to sign form 180 before the American people Posted on 10/02/2004 2:33:21 AM PDT

Why didn't the Prez when the moderator asked him if there was anything about his opponents (I forget the word he used) moral character, etc.....reply: "Not per se, but my opponent and the party he represents has made numerous accusations about my National Guard Service as a Fighter Pilot, all which have proven to be false. In light of my signing a form 180 that released all my Military records to refudiate those accusations I would request that my opponent do likewise.

As a matter of fact I just happen to have the appropriate from 180 here for the good Senator's signature so he can sign it before the American people tonight....

Ahem -- That is exactly how I feel. I don't read ANYTHING that comes out of that rag. I expect the race to narrow in the polls as we approach Nov 2, but I could care less about what they print -- And I certainly am not going to believe the story when they are the first to break it, and use drudge to whore it around the blogosphere...

Baggy eyes Lehrer kept him so busy trying to defend himself, he couldn't think straight. Besides he had just been witness to a trajedy. I think he was probably suffering from sensory overload. Maybe a mistake on his advisors part but now they have time to learn from their mistakes.
