Does anyone have a timeline for the Dan Rather/C-BS memogate affair? A co-worker is arguing that the White House released the memo to C-BS, therefore Dan Rather has NOT lost his credibility.
Your coworker is quite confused. CBS gave the documents to the White House, not the other way around.
CBS faxed the documents to the White House, not the other way around.
The White House released a forged document harshly criticizing Bush? Ask the "co-worker" to repeat that several times. Then laugh and point at him.
Your co-worker is wrong.
John Roberts at CBS carried the memos to the White House at 11:00 a.m. the day that they aired them.
That's the first time they had seen them; after the show, the White House gave reporters who asked for them copies.
Go to "search" on this site and type in CBS Timeline and I'm sure you'll find one as there were some excellent ones posted here.
Two hours or so BEFORE Rather's show the White House was given the memos. They of course did not comment on them prompting CBS to think that they were legit.

your co-worker is insane. keep your eye on him...
There is a timeline on www.rathergate.com
It's a link to the American Thinker:

The White House released the memos (without comment) that CBS gave to them.
Old news. We are working on the rumor that Bush will introduce a draft immediately after winning re-election.
If Kerry somehow manages to get elected, against all odds, we may be absolutely CERTAIN that a draft for "national service" will be introduced with the first State of the Union address that a President Kerry may deliver.
You mean you fault the White House for not jumping the gun, ala SeeBS, and commenting without time to properly vet the copies of the copies of the forged memos? Only an idiot would have issued a conclusive statement under those conditions (or expected someone to issue the statement).
LOL! But I don't think that CBS was big enough to have been Sauron!
True... they simply represent Sauron's "eye", or his tool...
whatever.
I think of them more like the rest of the MSM as the Orks (sp?). :)
(Doh!)
the way i understand it is cbs news gave the white house a copy a couple hours before the story ran; after the fiasco aired, cbs said the white house didn't say they were fake, which led them to believe they were legit; no word on how the white house should know what personal records from 30 years ago were legit or fake, and the white house did not say the information in the memos was accurate.
this is cbs spin on it... that since the white house didn't respond they decided to run the piece.
