I expect the people at Scaled Composites are going to be working some very looooong nights over the next two weeks. I hope their telemetry can tell them what caused that roll and how to prevent it.

They say the plane cost was kept down by using stick and rudder controls instead of some fancy fly by wire system.

Maybe the rolls were not as big a deal as they looked. Up there is zero-g.. it's not like he was hurtling through air. As soon as he feathered it down and it hit air, he had 300,000+ feet to get it under control. The FNC guy at the time (on air) said, eh, it's nothing he can't handle.
