Maybe the rolls were not as big a deal as they looked. Up there is zero-g.. it's not like he was hurtling through air. As soon as he feathered it down and it hit air, he had 300,000+ feet to get it under control. The FNC guy at the time (on air) said, eh, it's nothing he can't handle.
