Neil Armstrong got put into the spin cycle in an X-15 once.

He had a tough little interlude as command pilot aboard Gemini 8 as well (uncontrolled roll and spin while docked with the Agena).

Don't know (that was a little before my time), but I did read a bio of him when I was a kid. Think it was titled The Fastest Man Alive.
