Punk Conservatism
The American Spectator ^ | 9/28/2004 | Andrew Cline

Posted on 09/28/2004 12:17:08 PM PDT by GoldwaterAvenger

THOSE WITH THEIR EARS to the ground have not been surprised that punk has resonated with conservatives. Rolling Stone magazine rock critic Anthony DeCurtis told the BBC this year, "In a lot of ways in the United States, the Republicans have gotten much more punk than the Democrats."

The ingredients of punk rebellion -- introversion, angst, and teenage alienation -- belong to no ideology. To the extent that conformity is encouraged or discouraged by particular political movements, the right is now more "punk" than the left.

The left espouses group identity; the right promotes individualism. The left says we all must hold hands and sing campfire songs together; the right says, "Screw you, hippie, I'm doing my own thing."

Point taken. Much of the agenda of the political right is blatantly repugnant to those of us who subscribe to objective principles of freedom.
Unfortunately, concessions must be made given the two political directions we are being forced to choose between.
The "lesser of two evils" theory applies now more than ever before--in my lifetime, at least.

Unfortunately, concessions must be made given the two political directions we are being forced to choose between.

And therein lies the true fight for individuality! At this point the battle is lost before the polls even open.

If individuality has any hope at all, it lies in breaking this twisted game of 'good cop/bad cop' the major parties are playing with the voters. Until individualists take control of at least one party, they have no horse in the race, and the decision being made come election day is between a slap in the face or a punch in the stomach.

Here in America, the idea of getting 51% means a great deal to many of us real conservatives. I rang a thousand doorbells for Barry in "64 when I should have been doing my 9th grade algebra. I was once silly enough to join the "losertarian party" back in the '70's. I can't say I'm a fan of country club/security mom Republicans anymore than I like religious zealots from the right, but it is absurd to disrespect them when truly anti-American jerks like leftist Democrats could take over the nation. Your notion that most American are repulsive stinkers is a useless, self-indulgent, elitist canard which only puts "us" right in the @#$%house.

I said -
"concessions must be made"

Please refresh my memory as to where I labeled "most Americans" as "repulsive stinkers".

Self-indulgent? Probably. Idealist? Most definitely, but also a realist.
Elitist? Hell no. Im at a loss as to where you came up with that particular assessment. I am no sycophant of GWB, but make no mistake, I am voting republican these days. My gripe is precisely the same as your was back in your less pragmatic days, my friend:
I'll take some arbitrary freedom as opposed to some state control--but there is no objective reason why I(or anyone else)shouldn't have complete self-autonomy.

On the subject of the libertarian party...its a damn shame.

Forgive my rantings, your reply was not directed at me after all. Feeling a little effusive today.

You're right. I shouldn't make such a fuss during an election cycle. The time for dissent is during the primary, right?

Oh, that's right. The party platform and all the nominees were chosen behind closed doors before the primary, and were presented for a politburo type 'applause' vote that made for such a cute photo-op.

I guess that means I'm back to making a fuss before the election.

OK. But you missed a great opportunity to change your tag line to "Rose Ann Roseannadanna."

That's because liberalism has turned into the drone class of society.

"On the subject of the libertarian party...its a damn shame."

A casualty of a two party system, along with viable groups on the left. The pressures to conform to form that magic 51% are often greater than standing for what one believes is truly right, on either side of the fence.

http://www.self-gov.org/quiz.html

I suspect democracy would be better served with four or five parties of relatively equal size corresponding to the regions in the above quiz.

Of course, four/five party compromise would probably lead to the same result - centrism with some leaning towards one pole or another...likely not as strongly libertarian as the breakdown suggests, though... being a libertarian site, its viewership is skewed of course.

You miss my point. My comments concerning your views are irrespective of timing issues. Your opinion is offensive and wrongheaded all year long. Most voters tend to remember being called stinkin' morons for a least a decade or two so I don't think your heartfelt views are anything but counterproductive to the cause I support (defeat dims, shoot commies, destroy terrorism, the full exploration of individual personality . . . that sort of thing. Losing elections to fake patriot, socialist dreamer, unethical and corrupt Democrat weasels is very bad for "my" country. I'd support Galt and I'd support McCain before I'd let John eF'ing Kerrey take over. The fact that you can't see this as an important value means that I don't have to respect your opinion.

The opinion I expressed was big government CINO's, through their repeated behavior have long lost the bragging rights to individuality. Be offended if you must, but when such hypocrisy as found in this article is spouted off, some are going to comment on it.

Pal? Wrong generation, perhaps. It was the SNL character played by Gilda Radner. I guess you want the full treatment. You, like Roseannadanna, would go into a long rant due to a "pathetic" misunderstanding of an elementary word. She would be corrected and and say. "Never mind." Radner did the bit, let's say for fun, a hundred times and I thought it had become part of the culture. Excuuussse me. In any case, the irrelevant refutation of my comments to freeee must be embarrassing to you. So Pal, perhaps you could have changed your tag line to "Never mind."

I have no idea....I knew plenty of goths in high school, or who should be known as goths if they were today the way they were back then. I think 'goth' in the 80s was equivalent to punk...at least thats my understanding...

thought it would be of interest! :D

Well Pal, whether I refute your views or freeee refutes them is what is truly irrelevant. There was no misunderstanding. You display the same degree of myopia as the average dogmatic leftist stooge, albeit in the opposite direction.

BTW- Hasn't SNL historically been the forum for obnoxious, sneering Hollywood elites to lampoon the beliefs of right-wingers such as yourself?
