Lauer's Not a Shrink but did Stay in a Holiday Inn: W "in Denial," "Living in Fantasy Land"
The Today Show

Posted on 09/28/2004 4:31:34 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

If Katie can be an expert on colonoscopies, and Dan Rather an ace document authenticator, why can't Matt Lauer be an armchair psychoanalyst?

Move over Sigmund, here comes Matt. In a just-completed interview with senior Bush advisor Karen Hughes, Lauer suggested W was "in denial," and "living in fantasy land" because of the optimistic statements the president has made about the situation in Iraq.

Lauer's litany of purported failure in Iraq included the number of US casualties, the car bombs, beheadings, and areas where elections could not be conducted.

Hughes wasn't buying. She defended W's view of the war, and in particular his statement in the O'Reily interview that the "mission accomplished" carrier visit and remarks made there were justified.

Stumped there, Matt moved on to the essence of the Bush campaign's anti-Kerry strategy: the fact that the lugubrious, Gallic-looking windsurfer is an inveterate flip flopper.

Lauer suggested that W had changed his position on steel tariffs and the 9/11 Commission, and asked if W had "evolved" on those issues and if it is nececessarily a bad thing?

Karen wouldn't be lured into Matt's line of reasoning. Instead she focused on Kerry, pointing out that on as crucial an issue as Iraq, it is dangerous for a leader to have "8, 9 or 10 different positions."

Karen was tough without being unpleasant, and Lauer's agreeable tone at the end seemed to acknowledge that he knew he had been had by a better . . . woman.

I miss Ari Fleischer as well. I wonder when he'll be finished with his book. Perhaps he'll return for at least part of the second term.

Ewwww...braggart Blow'Reilly is on Fox & Friends right now and they just had Elizabeth Edwards on with some group called "Moms With A Mission." I may have to fix a second cup of coffee this morning.

At the risk of revealing the true depths of my ignorance, I will ask this:

What's up with all the Holiday Inn references?

i think freepers sometimes take fellow freepers for granted and that isn't fair. i literally can't abide the MSM and i agree with you it is VERY important to know what is going on there, otherwise it is impossible to combat them with our fellow citizens whom we may be attempting to convert/inform. Those stalwart stoics who can endure the MSM and synopsize their crap for the rest of us really do provide a great service. bravo to you. : )

There's a cute series of TV commercials in which someone, during a crisis, acts like an incredibly knowledgeable expert, in places like a nuclear lab, an operating room, etc., and someone, impressed by the wisdom of his observations, asks: "are you a [nuclear physicist or whatever it might be] and the person answers 'no, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night."

How about all the schools (with women, too) that have opened? All the hospitals, electricity etc etc etc

With people like this carrying their water, the Kerry Campaign doesn't need to spend a dime on advertising...makes any thinking person ill.

Ummm. OK. I don't have a TV, so I've not seen those commercials.

Thanks.

His apparent flip-flops are a transparent window into a soul racked with insecurity and doubt.

Several articles showed up yesterday about Kerry being 'deliberative' as the reason for him being slow to make decisions.

I have known people like that. They, like Kerry, weren't 'deliberative', but used the 'need to gain a bit more information' as an excuse to put off having to make decision. Kerry flipflops because Kerry is incapable of coming to the point in his mental processes of making (and staying with) a decision. Kerry is easily swayed by external opinions.

We remember x42 making decisions based on polls. Kerry would make decisions based on the last analyst he consulted. If Kerry's decision went wrong, he would blame the analyst.

Kerry is nearly incapable of making decisions. And Kerry blames others for his own foibles and mistakes.

Lauer's chronic cocaine use (provided by NBC?)
makes him paranoid and egomaniac.

"Why does any watch that crap???"

'governs' watches that "crap" for the rest of us so we don't have to! Like a sentinel for us...an early warning system. SOMEBODY has to keep an eye on the enemy's doings.

thankyouthankyouthankyou, 'governs'!!!

Great point. I guess Lauer would have really ripped the hide off Churchill too as he worked to lift British morale during the darkest days of WWII. "Mr. Prime Minister, shouldn't you stop denying reality and ackowledge the obvious: we cannot win and should seek a truce with Chancellor Hitler?"

Easy answer-- What if Freepers hadn't been watching Dan Rather on SixtyMinutes2?

Someone has to watch in order to be a watchdog. Got it?

"fantasy world" is a new ratmedia phrase."

Bingo! I think it's hilarious to listen to some of the talking heads every day to try and figure out what they're "words" are going to be for the upcoming few days ahead...Kerry started it last week when he said HE drove on by Disneyworld/Orland, but Bush never left 'Fantasy world'.
