If Katie can be an expert on colonoscopies, and Dan Rather an ace document authenticator, why can't Matt Lauer be an armchair psychoanalyst?
Move over Sigmund, here comes Matt. In a just-completed interview with senior Bush advisor Karen Hughes, Lauer suggested W was "in denial," and "living in fantasy land" because of the optimistic statements the president has made about the situation in Iraq.
Lauer's litany of purported failure in Iraq included the number of US casualties, the car bombs, beheadings, and areas where elections could not be conducted.
Hughes wasn't buying. She defended W's view of the war, and in particular his statement in the O'Reily interview that the "mission accomplished" carrier visit and remarks made there were justified.
Stumped there, Matt moved on to the essence of the Bush campaign's anti-Kerry strategy: the fact that the lugubrious, Gallic-looking windsurfer is an inveterate flip flopper.
Lauer suggested that W had changed his position on steel tariffs and the 9/11 Commission, and asked if W had "evolved" on those issues and if it is nececessarily a bad thing?
Karen wouldn't be lured into Matt's line of reasoning. Instead she focused on Kerry, pointing out that on as crucial an issue as Iraq, it is dangerous for a leader to have "8, 9 or 10 different positions."
Karen was tough without being unpleasant, and Lauer's agreeable tone at the end seemed to acknowledge that he knew he had been had by a better . . . woman.
Today Show Shrink-for-a-Day ping.
Why does any watch that crap???
The fantasy land is 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Matt needs a reality check, unfortunately I cannot assist, since that channel does not work on either of my TV's ;>)
Answering your question would require me to play the psychoanalyst. All I can say is that millions of people do. And because that's so, I think it's worthwhile to keep track of what the MSM are up to.
He is so obsessed with Vietnam that he sees everything as though he is still on the swift boat.
The insurgency is not the Viet Cong.
Kerry is stuck in the middle of the last century fighting within himself a war of conscience.
His apparent flip-flops are a transparent window into a soul racked with insecurity and doubt.
On the other hand, George W. Bush sees the war clearly and is focused on victory, not a past quagmire of will.
"fantasy world" is a new ratmedia phrase. Last week a moron asked frenchie if he didn't think that Rummy and W were living in the same "fantasy world". But of course we're just stupid lemmings and nobody out here noticed this :-)!
Thanks for reporting back to us from the front lines of television. We know you are taking one for the team by doing this, and it is appreciated.
>>Why does any watch that crap???<<
GLGB does it so you don't have to!!!
Sure you didn't stay in a Holiday Inn last night? ;-)
She is a PRO!!!
I only wish that Ari Fleischer were back. He was a pro too. He was so pleasant and intelligent, and had that wonderfully diasarming smile. He had those reporters eating out of his hand.
He would be very helpful these past few weeks! Really!
Come back, Ari!
I have to once again compliment you on your excellent writing skills, glgb. Your reviews are always on target and it's so nice not to have to watch the morning idiots.
Please, every time I see polyp-face Katie, Matt the Geek I feel like vomiting. The fact that these two had Kitty Litter Kelley in their show speaks volumes. Notice, though, that nobody talks about the Kitty show because nobody cares. CBS, NBC, CNN...they are all an arm of Poodle's campaign.
Your info is great!
and we appreciate hearing it secondhand from you, so as to be informed, yet not to have to withstand the torture ourselves. you provide a valuable service : )
oh ME I despise those two...
have they EVER had an original thought between them??
"Fantasy world of spin." Isn't that the new Lockhart/Kerry/ABCNNBCBS catch phrase?
Matt "sniff, sniff" Lauer.
Matt "What's that white stuff under your nose" Lauer
Matt "President Bush lives in a fantasy world" Lauer
Who is Matt Lauer?
she was SO GOOD on Fox just now!!
