Bush: Militarizing Border Won't Stop Illegal Deluge
Newsmax.com ^ | Monday, Sept. 27, 2004 11:07 p.m. EDT

The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.

"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

Story Continues Below

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.

"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."

The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.

"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.

"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."

When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."

It's time to offer Mexico a choice to become part of the United States! The first generation or two would find it hardest to adjust but ultimately it would be of benefit to all of us. In addition the the corrupt federal Mexican government would be abolished and each Mexican State would come under the juristiction of the US constituion.

Allowances would have to be made in Our constitution to allow an increase in Congessional representative numbers...to say double to triple what is allowed in congess now...of course each Mexican state would get its 2 senators. The Mexicans could keep their political parties...which would create a rupture in the two party hegemony which has paralyzed our system for so long. Additionally, RICO laws and other DEA laws could be brought more rigorously to bear on the fabled drug gangs in Mexico!

I repeat: It is time to offer Mexico a choice to join with the United States. Perhaps they would never want to join us...but perhaps it is time to ask them. Otherwise, there will be blood on our borders sooner or later!

I agree with everything you say. It's just the arrogance of Bush on this issue really ticks me off. He may be coming around "but everything he ever let go of had claw marks all over it". He really can't bring himself to see that this policy of inviting illegals into this country is doing more harm than good. I am truly fearful of what he will do when he is elected for the second term. Will he continue to come around or say "What's it to them? They don't matter."?

As I stated previously - like it or not, the SS# has become a means whereby one is identified in almost every facet of American life. I understand the opposition based on Amendment #4, but it's far too late for that argument's relevancy since we're beyond the conception point of an ID system.

Why not introduce additional measures against fraud to an outdated documentation system so neither government, employees, nor employers have continued excuses to circumvent the law? - unless, of course, you happen to be one of those who benefit from fraud...

Then, why not link those SS# to state issued DL's and voter registrations? Significantly reducing fraud has to be a top priority SOON and enhancing the systems we already have seems a much viable option than inventing another overseeing bureaucracy - unless you're one of the corrupt government officials or citizens who benefit from deceit.

I'm convinced more than 15-20% of current taxpayer-funded government expenditures are gotten through fraud or deceit.

Militarization of our borders won't help because those citizens, illegals, and government officials who benefit from felonious activity simply don't want it to.

"I am truly fearful of what he will do when he is elected for the second term."

I mean absolutely no disrespect to our President, but I'm more fearful he or Karl Rove will ignorantly think his re-election is, somehow, a people's mandate in favor of his asinine amnesty not-to-be-called-amnesty plan.

I don't think he believes there is a mandate for amnesty --- it's just that whose interests are going to win out --- the Mexican elite could be quickly run out of power if immigration were slowed down in any way --- and our government doesn't want any big changes taking place with the power structure in Mexico. Right now, our leaders figure we have to keep them propped up --- no matter what the costs are to Americans.

Maybe, as someone posted earlier, we should offer them statehood.

Getting them under what's left of our constitutional government might not be a bad proposition to all.

It wouldn't work --- plus it would be 31 states not just one --- and they would be extremely liberal socialist states we'd be adding. What would we even begin to do with the powerful sindicatos? The unions of Mexico which have a lockhold on that government and the people? Mexicans have a 70% union membership rate (we have something like 10%) --- plus a most of the population of Mexico would immediately qualify for every kind of welfare program there is. Although if one state at a time broke off from Mexico and requested to join the USA --- such as Texas did, I could see it.

Things just have to change before people make the border a priority. There is no mandate to get violent now.

Things do not have to change. There is no need to get violent.

Regional holding compounds each served by one transport aircraft with three crews. One destination facility close to the border served by numerous buses, each with one driver and two armed guards x three shifts.

When a plane load accumulates at a holding compound, fly to destination facility. Bus over the border well into Mexico. Release.

Easy, inexpensive, efficient, and you better believe the border crossing will stop.

There is a reason politicians want to inundate America with the folks from a third world. They do it, advocate it and justify it in the face of an overwhelming resistance from the American people and in the face of more than one remedy that will work.

We are given just two choices in the coming election. A man that will compromise security and turn America, in terms of wages and demographics, a third world county, and a man that will that will compromise security and turn America, in terms of wages and demographics, a third world county.

Each side says that you had better vote for their candidate or the other will win and he will be worse. But the fact is, there is a cabal working overtime to see that the polyglot happens and the American section of the world is regionalized. Both major parties are part of it.

Some of so afraid of Bush's reelection, they can't see this on the part of Kerry and others are so afraid of Kerry's election, they can't see this on the part of Bush.

Methinks this little pressure play is organized.

Now hold on a sec, I said, "...guys frothing at the mouth..."

Are you frothing at the mouth? No? Then I wasn't talking about you. I'm talking about these losers who spam EVERY thread about, saying that whatever we are talking about (nuclear weapons, tax cuts, mooses, etc. ) isn't important because of the eeeeeeevil Mexicans. Then they'll go on and say crazy things, like how they think every man, woman, and child coming across the border should be shot. Well. That is nuts.

It you don't fit in that category, don't take offense. :)

"You're so vain, you probably think this song is about youuuuuuu..."

"How generous of you"

No, I don't. You know, California could take other measures to enforce immigration issues but they don't. Your worst enemy is your own state government, with its steady push to give illegals driver's licenses, parole to roam freely, and even voting rights. Bush is your least concern - at least he's trying to turn a horrible situation into at least a more manageable one. You should trust your president.

Nah. I have a million ways to say "punk".

But obviously no way to debate without childish ad-hominems, which I repeat, are technically against the FR TOS.

Really? Prove it. Beyond a reasonable doubt. In a court of law.

That wouldn't be very hard would it?

I mean, Oakland had to stop putting up random sobriety checks because they were catching too many illegal aliens.

You really haven't thought this one out. Find illegal aliens in Los Angeles would be like shooting fish in a barrel. And you know it.

Not hardly. There is a world of difference between being deported or imprisoned for a certain time, and being machine-gunned by the Border Patrol.

And, further, the advocates of shooting illegal immigrants believe that the crime - worthy of being punished by death without trial - is setting foot on soil.

I am amazed (it seems something shocks me every week) at how las Vegas has taken on the look of baja. I have been to baja quite a few times. Many places in vegas look just like it.

It seems as if every fast food joint is staffed with non english speaking mexicans. They have one or two that can take your order. But it is frustrating because they use broken english and then they ask questions of others in spanish to get a answer to your question.

How wierd is it that way too often I am shopping and everyone around me is speaking spanish. Construction work is ALL most completely done by mexicans and you cannot communicate on the job site. that is very frustrating.

It is as if I am in baja. I dont begrude them wanting a better life nonetheless I am very concerned about the future of my son and others. Construction has been a way out of poverty for white and black males. For tha vast majority that finish high school, learning a trade is almost the only option to have a decent life and raise a family. That has been destroyed here in Vegas. Only the toughest will survive in a system that is slanted to cheap illegal mexican labor.

The mexicans do not want white boys on the job site let alone their crew. Way too many white boys cut and run because of the racism from illegal aliens. As I watch the existing white tradesmen grow old and retire I dont see many young white men learning the trades. This may be a short (very short) term fix for SS but I dont understand what the politicians are up to.

The only reasonable excuse for what they are allowing is to destroy the middle class, end national soveringty, erase the border. In other words bring down american might to third world status. It is happening before my eyes. Vegas is becoming mexico.

You already broke my heart. You're a Californian who won't admit your President is 100% wrong

Don't be hard on him. Freson ain't California, it's Southern Oregon.

That "California" thing for everything north of the LA county line is a minor techinicality.

Sure, that's all their up to. They just came up to stick a foot on American soil, then go home.

I don't know what they whole debate is about. People just want to make footprints in the soil. What's so bad about that?

I say we let 'em.

I will vote for Bush this year, however I doubt that four years from now I'll even bother to vote in any national election. While open borders will continue for the next four years, and we can count on that, we Americans will be overwhelmed by the millions upon millions more of illegals, which will cause our country to self destruct.

I will vote for Bush also in the hope that he gets to appoint supreme court justices. In a small way I thought gore deserved to be elected so he would get the blame for all the crap slick did that W is now being blamed for. The only reason I abandoned this thought is because of the SCJ. Here we are 4 years later and none of the geezers retired. Its as if they are waiting for a dem P. You can bet I will vote third party next time.

You and your millions of imaginary friends can go rise somewhere else - maybe you call all meet in a linen closet somewhere. I am sure there will be room to spare.

All they really have to do, if they're so concerned with the border, is to click here. Put their money where their mouths are.

The fact of the matter is that uncontrolled immigration is a problem. The fact is also that some proposed solutions to this problem are unconstituitional; some are absurd; and there is very little give. Some loudmouths won't be satisfied with anything less that machine gun nests and minefields, and they're the ones dominating the debate.

Every person is entitled to the equal protection of the law. That's the founding princple of this nation. Until it's proven false by the Government through due process in a court of law, any person must be considered a citizen and immune from deportation.

I have no problem with holding and deporting people caught sneaking across the border; have hearings right there at the B.P. base. In fact, I don't think that a hearing is presently even required - the Border Patrol can turn people away without judicial recourse, at least at airports. Giving appearance tickets and then expecting people to show up for the hearing does seem quite silly.
