The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.
"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "It’s working a little better.
"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. We’re modernizing border techniques, we’re using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."
The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.
"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.
"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."
When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well it’s a, a truthful answer."
I'm very much against militarizing the border in urban areas and areas that are fairly populated --- and that goes for my own land --- really I don't want the army traipsing across my land (or anyone) looking for illegals. But out in the vast open areas where the drug cartels and violent criminals are coming over I could see the military patrolling. The more harmless types aren't too likely to take those more dangerous routes anyhow --- it's easy enough to get over close to town. There are some though who have good reason to avoid detection that use those very remote routes.

Militarization will mean numerous Mexican kills and casualties. A whole lot of people will care.
I know, it's hard to be sincere, when you’re speaking to idiots; but I try.
Yes, I understand all that, but I do not agree with the idea of using a federal ID card that must be presented for any of us to get work. Nor using the SS number (a system that should be scrapped). This type of system violates our (all of us, it would not just apply to illegals) rights to privacy and security of personal information and every employer's rights as well.

There seems to be two ways that wages go up --- labor shortages where business competes for labor --- begins offering higher wages, benefits such as health insurance, etc --- or unions and violence and socialism and government involvement.
My Mother was from a family of 11, Mr. Robinson. Her Mother immigrated LEGALLY from Hungary, then married an American. They raised their 11 children without government assistance, probably the same way your parents did. It is not up to American citizens/taxpayers to pay the bills for the millions of illegal aliens who sneak across our borders.
They're here illegally, they're sucking up all our resources, our social services, our schools, our hospitals, and they're taking our jobs. We're forced to pay for all of it. Our government is allowing this to happen. This is not a racial thing, it's an economic thing. You can't be surprised that people are angry.
People would be shocked to know the border is already very militarized on the Mexican side --- their army is there --- crawling all over the border. There isn't an illegal who won't tell you that --- many aren't sure what they're doing --- but they will stop people --- sometimes they're looking for Central Americans but they apparently are looking for drugs --- not necessarily to stop the flow of drugs into the USA but to protect one cartel from competitors.

When faced with a choice between the lesser of two evils, the answer is obvious. And the only alternatives are Bush and Kerry. At least with Bush e can hope to gain some leverage and some chance of Constitutional Federal Judges.
And it's one two three what are our borders for, don't ask me I don't give damn, best learn to speak Mexican...... Country Joe and the Fish Tacos.

I did know that Mexico polices its southern border very well, you are right.
In any event, we will just have to agree to disagree. I don't think americans (right now) will go for that.
The military could also find many who are abandoned by their smugglers before they actually die --- there are a lot of deaths of Mexicans --- and really not very many people seem to care. Obviously the Mexican government doesn't care --- it does nothing to make their lives worthwhile back home --- it just has it's eyes on what money they could send back if they make it over here. We had a number of deaths in this area this summer and recently --- pregnant women, 16 year old kids --- heat related or drownings in the river and canals and no one talks about it or seems bothered by it. It's kind of like traffic accident deaths --- they make the front or second page and people read about it but don't lose sleep over it.
That's what I've been trying to say. It's an economic problem and (short of war with Mexico) the long term solution will be an economic solution.

Mexico is policing it's northern border very well also --- I'm not sure every reason their army is there --- but it's all over the place out there. They will interrogate people they find out there and check their papers and if they're Guatemalans they arrest them --- which is why so many Guatemalans stop in Chiapas to buy fake Mexican birth certificates before they make the trip up --- but they forget to get the IFE card which is kind of important.
In effect an illegals cost of living would go up by whatever the individual tax rebate would be set at. For illegals with families, it would probably price them out of our labor market."
I like it. Best answer to the economic problem so far, IMHO.
Though I'd still be looking for a way for the gov't to do it's job protecting our borders from our enemies...
Without millions of Mexicans pouring over the borders, maybe our Border Patrol could concentrate a bit more on keeping out the bad guys?
I believe that using military force against those who are invading to our homeland is constitutional. I'll admit that I i'm not positive about this, but I sure hope it is constitutional.
