The U.S. has no plans to deploy troops along the Mexican border to stanch the deluge of illegal aliens currently pouring into the country at the rate of 3 million per year, President Bush said in an interview broadcast on Monday.
"As the governor of Texas, I was very aware of this issue," Bush told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly.

"There is a long border, that makes it hard to control. We have beefed up places along the border to try to stop" the flow, he said. When told that his policy didn't seem to be working, Bush insisted, "Its working a little better.
"They're doing a pretty good job down in Arizona, which is the main border crossing. ... I think there's a thousand more border patrol agents along the border. Were modernizing border techniques, were using better surveillance methods to stop this crossing at the border."
The president contended, however, that illegal immigration was driven primarily by the economic realities of the region.
"If you can make 50 cents in the interior of Mexico and five bucks in the interior of the United States, you're coming for the five bucks," he explained.
"I happen to believe the best way to enhance the border is to have temporary-worker cards available for people," he said. "I think the long-term solution for this issue on our border is for Mexico to grow a middle class. That's why I believe in NAFTA."
When warned that "a lot of people are not going to like that answer," Bush told O'Reilly, "Well its a, a truthful answer."
What most of us are EXTREMELY concerned about it those willing to fracture every law in the books to get here then expect to get their hand outs. What most of us object to is a border so porous during a shooting war with Islamic Extremists that they could be sneaking TANKS across our border for all we know...
And people like you want to sit there and make excuses. Not to mention insinuating that those against unrestrained illegal inflow as being racists. Thanks. That oughta help things along...
Wrong Mr. President.
Solution...
1. Scrutinize, optimize, and minimize welfare programs, ensuring only the honestly needy are taken care of.
...it's way too easy to defraud the system, and the standards are too low anyway.
2. Wake up to the reality that Americans will not be in favor of living in a walled in country.
...We are a free people, and we like it that way. Besides, I can see the headlines now...President Chirac: "Mr. President, TEAR DOWN THAT WALL!"
3. Apply equal and fair treatment to the Mexicans as we do to the Canadians. Especially in terms of jobs and joint economic programs.
...In other words, give them their respect. The canucks have had a free ride for way too long, and imho, it's undeserved. Why do we close down US plants to build in Mexico, and yet, we give the Canadians (Quebec) money to keep our plants up there open?
NAFTA may not be THE answer, but it is a part of the overall "equalization" of economies. Now, this may not sit well with some who are used to denigrating and looking down upon the Mexicans, but we do need a somewhat balanced economic infrastructure in N.America. Ever heard of the EU? China? The reality is, they are our competitors now, and they are gaining ground on us...fast. We, very well, could become economically isolated. I see those signs already. We need to give the Mexicans a big hug, metaphorically speaking, but under our terms. :) And that's the challenge that, I think, Bush is trying to deal with.
4. Enforcing the existing laws is useless, as they were written a million years ago for a vastly different world. We need to scrap the immigration act and begin anew.
fwiw, I have an idea. First, someone needs to figure out how many people our Country can hold with the current infrastructure, and then set a yearly entry limit. Now, let's suppose we look at the US as a brand, if you will, 'cause we do have a tremendous "brand recognition" factor. Then we look at immigration as a commodity. Now, taking these factors into consideration, it only makes sense to create laws that treat being in this country as a valuable experience, right? Then why do we give that away without any investment? I think those wanting to live here, either permanently or temporarily, should "invest" of themselves. They should be required to learn our basic laws, traditions, customs, and know exactly what's expected of them while they are here. And be accountable to this. There, also, should be a waiting period, to allow for proper vetting of applicants. So, what we do is, setup "America" schools in our Embassies, using US Marines as instructors, under the supervision of the Ambassador staff, for a period of one or two years. This gives us time to decide and vet their entry, and them to decide if they really, really want to live here under our terms.
I know it sounds nutty, but we ARE filling up here, and not with the best (as in decent) people the world has to offer.
Now, the Dums will never go for this because, as we all know, the more educated and decent people we have in this country, the more Repubs well also have.
OK, now flame
:O)

Listen, man, I said it isnt' right and needs to be controlled, but only so much can be done.
What would you do if you were W?
CLOSE THE BORDER then track down and EVICT/DEPORT the illegals of ALL colors and hues. Incarcerate the OTMs who have snuck through our undefended southern borders (you know, the YOUNG ARABIC MALES of the Mooselimb faith). In other words, DO THE JOB FOR WHICH HE WAS HIRED. Otherwise, it's past time to fire him AND all the other open-borders, open (taxpayers') wallets politicians.
And if that doesn't work. Then it would be time to put the military on the border and shoot anyone trying to sneak in.
What I would NOT do... is say that we are under dire threat from Islamic terror groups and FAIL to do anything. I would not say that SS/welfare/medicare is in dire trouble while shoveling money out to illegals.
No, I don't object. For all the good it will do you, be my guest. You and I don't count. They tap our paychecks every two weeks, and that's all they need to know about us.
Ditto, double ditto. especially the taxpayer assistance and border baby crap.
Yes, I agree.
500,000 illegals x .05 muhammadans = 25,000 mujihadeen in America over our borders the last 12 months!
Disband the IRS and reassign the agents to secure our borders...they can harass America's enemies for a change versus America's producers.
Bush is in the left field bleachers eating a hot dog, sipping on a Coke and chewing on some corn regarding our border and port security...
BUMP.
Clue: NAFTA isn't doing anything to help Mexico grow a middle class.
The actual effect is that it's diminishing OUR middle class.
Hi HitmanNY, see my post #112:

It is an admittedly rudimentary idea, but it's a start...
We'll deal with this after the re-election.
Criminals are criminals, no matter what the color. Most illegal aliens happen to be Mexicans...its just a fact...sorry. If you're all for "sensitive" justice for illegals, perhaps Kerry is your man. Unless your retiring soon, most of us will continue to work and pay taxes so these criminals can have it nice and easy in the U.S., at our expense; that don't fly with me, and it don't fly with the majority of Americans IMHO. And lets not even get started talking about what our kids will be left of this country for our kids to deal with, if the trend continues.
If he keeps talking like this, there may not BE a re-election. The time is NOW to start dealing with it; for Bush, tomorrow may never come unless he DOES do his job. As I said, I would fire him out of hand for talk like that.

You got that right. The only thing NAFTA is doing is inflated the pockets of the Mexican elites. I reference the movie House of Spirits if anyone wants to know what the Mexican elites are all about.
