U.S. destroyers deploying off N. Korea(Ships are first phase in Bush plan for 'missile shield')

In the first step toward erecting a multibillion-dollar shield to protect the United States from foreign missiles, the U.S. Navy will begin deploying state-of-the-art destroyers to patrol the waters off North Korea as early as next week.

The mission, to be conducted in the Sea of Japan by ships assigned to the Navy’s 7th fleet, will help lay the foundation for a system to detect and intercept ballistic missiles launched by “rogue nations.”

Washington hopes to complete the network over the next several years.

Maybe this is just Rumsfeld's way of saying "hello-ha" (it means howdy) to our North Korean friends. Would that Patriot system be of any use to Japan?

I did say "off that part of the pond" - not 'under it'.

One of the cool dudes at my church was a squiddy on the Bowfin after doing a tour on the Pampanito. He actually survived a sub sinking in the 30's (the Squalus, I think he said).

He missed the tour on the Pampanito when she sent a brand-new IJN flatop to the bottom.

"Mr. Kerry rapidly retreated from this claim only to stumble once again. He next asserted that there really was no reason to think that even if you wanted to build a missile defense for the United States, you would want to protect either Hawaii or Alaska. As he put it, "Why would anyone want to?"

It is absolutely amazing to me that Hawaii is gripped with this insane enthusiasm any Democratic candidate.
If Kerry speaks like this of our state and doesn't bother to come and campaign here ,why in the world support him?
I think it is more a case of people out here just prefer to hate Bush rather than actually be enthusiastic about the Democratic candidate . They plan to vote for Kerry just because he is the only alternative.
oh...and Ralph Nader !

I would love to see our dear President come out to the
Kerry Islands and have a few words with the good people here,
starting with : "Remember Pearl Harbor????"

go figure......

What a maroon....if it's so undesirable, then let's drill it for oil.

That would have to be a HUGE missile to be ship launched and take down an ICBM.

I didn't know we had someting that big.

Excellent. Staring the midget right in the eye.

But let's not forget the bigger nation just to the North of the midget.
And they DO have an anti-ship missle we most likely cannot stop. Their "Sunburn" does mach 4, while traveling a dozen yards or so from the sea surface. Of course, according to this same Northerly neighbor's own published, stated, military plans & goals, they won't think they will be fully "ready" to confront the USA for about another twenty years or so...

Thank you Bill Clinton and the DNC for pushing that Loral/Hughes transfer of missle tech to the Chicoms. All the little Democrat congress critters stood up on their hind legs and told us that "the sensitive parts" of the technology would be "guarded".

Hey Bill---guard this! (the bastard should be tried for treason then executed, along with many industrialists that were involved, plus the members of the DNC who pushed such idiocy)

Unfortunatly, those whom will suffer for THAT deal, won't only (or even?) be those whom so foolishly made the deal.

Might have something to do w/ the little commie woodchuck bloviating about how he will turn Japan into a sea of fire.

Can we just put North Korea out of its misery already?

"Kerry would have enlisted the French and the UN to deploy their own destroyers to protect us."

You could fit that flotilla in an average sized bath tub.

"It would be really cool if they shot down the next N. Korea missile!"

Absolutely. It would be the equivalent of W giving Kim Jong Il a wedgie in front of the UN.

A BB, properly propelled, can bring down an ICBM. They are quite fragile, as I understand it (thin skinned.)

If anyone can negotiate with the tyrant KJ "ILL" it's Kerry, after all, they are Comrades that share the same ideology. Kerry will just have us park our interceptors in the area for "ILL" to pick up Hertz-style and our military boys will be the valets....that's Kerry's plan.

OOOOps,,I outed him w/o DNC approval,,,better go hide!

North Korea, for all its blustering, has for fifty years been conspicuous in NOT attacking other countries.

(Providing arms, missiles and rocket technology - Yes. But not attacking.)

Why start now with aggressive moves towards Japan, South Korea that would assure of a response from a more aggressive US?

doesn't make sense.

Or should I assume their leader is "more crazy" than before and actions WOULDN'T make sense now?

Anymore cracks about reducing the number of Navy's carriers, Rumsfeld?

Did a little digging on sunburn. While it looks impressive, I believe it would only be effective in a sneak attack. I'm not an expert, but they say it would take five to sink a 20,000 ton merchantman. One might damage a destroyer, but may not sink it. A carrier weighs in at over 90,000 tons. It's gonna take a few. To disable a carrier strike group, you're talking about a bunch of missiles.

The sunburn is very fast, moving skimming the sea at about mach 2.5. However, it's not impossible for our active defenses, missiles from cruisers and destroyers, missiles from aircraft, or the point defense systems to take them out. Without some warning, it would be very difficult, but not necessarily impossible.

However, if it's not a surprise, in other words our ships were in a war time environment. The E2 hawkeyes would be airborne and keeping watch quite some distance from the fleet. The fact is enemy boats would be very unlikely to get within launch range. If it did, the US Navy has a number of counter measures to defeat active radar homing.

The chinese would have to keep in mind, if they fail to take out the carrier, the return fire will probably sink most of their fleet.

I take them seriously, but I also remember all the information on the MIG 25. Best fighter in the world. It was faster and flew higher than anything we had...except it didn't live up to the billing. Syria flying MIG 25s was trumped by Israel flying F15 and F16s.

Be alert- absolutely. Let it stop us - no way.

Actually there is quite a detailed plan of a potential assault on North Korea by US and South Korean forces...that was made public....and the North Koreans refer to it many times, angrily, in their official KCNA news agency.
