In the first step toward erecting a multibillion-dollar shield to protect the United States from foreign missiles, the U.S. Navy will begin deploying state-of-the-art destroyers to patrol the waters off North Korea as early as next week.

The mission, to be conducted in the Sea of Japan by ships assigned to the Navy’s 7th fleet, will help lay the foundation for a system to detect and intercept ballistic missiles launched by “rogue nations.”

Washington hopes to complete the network over the next several years.

It's what the Navy does. The ships provide a unique solution, unless you want to build Aegis radar platforms in the sea of Japan, which may not be all that bad of an idea.
The corollary of this is the boomers we kept on patrol during the cold war. Until such time as the midget nut job is gone, we have to pay the price for our security.

Mr. Kerry rapidly retreated from this claim only to stumble once again. He next asserted that there really was no reason to think that even if you wanted to build a missile defense for the United States, you would want to protect either Hawaii or Alaska. As he put it, "Why would anyone want to?

This isnt really much of concern, to be honest. The China Sea and Sea of Japan have had American ships on station continuously since the 1920's. Its what the 7th fleet does. I spent months there long before the Aegis system was deployed.

If they do a radar picket system, this will force additional defensive rings and deployed systems to the Middle Pacific and the Pacific Coast of the US, but there are always ships in those areas too, even with today's cutbacks. The 7th fleet is the largest fleet in the USN.

Who's to say that we haven't already deployed a missile-defensive shield using SSBN Boomers (that even the Russians can't track, not to mention the Chi-Coms) ?

After all, a SSBN Boomer could launch several Intercept missiles over a very brief timeframe.

I never cease to marvel at how the MSM spins EVERY sentence of every story to put George Bush in the worst light possible. In this case it's stressing the cost of the system, as though that's a consideration when deciding how to protect those around North Korea from the madness of its rogue leaders. They do so often, and with deftness, that I sometimes miss it completely. I showed this article to someone and asked if they saw any bias or spin in the first few sentences. Nope, seemed perfectly OK to them. The combination of 30 plus years of unrelenting liberal education in public schools and the press picking up where the schools leave off it's no wonder so many Americans have a difficult time seeing the huge gap between the candidates of the major parties. I say frequently, and repeat here to stress it, I am so thankful that I am in the last years of my life and not the first years. I would not want to grow up in the America that the left wants to support.

Don't tell that to a WWII submariner. :)

JM - I think the Aegis radar is meant for early detection and tracking, once above say 40 or 50 miles altitude we can track it from Pearl, Alaska, Guam etc. The SM3 is meant to hit a ballistic missile at apogee, but I've been hearing more and more about ascent phase missile destruction. It would make sense to mount them on Aegis class ships.

I think you're right on target. The Aegis was just entering service as I left the USN, and its been upgraded heavily to have this capability.

I was a submariner, so we had different but totally devestating toys of our own. Not to detract from the abilities of the surface navy, however.
