Ex-Senator Hatfield Hospitalized After Fall Friday September 24, 2004 8:10am
Bethesda, Md. (AP) - Former governor and U.S.-Senator Mark Hatfield was hospitalized and is in intensive care with a head injury he suffered after helping to open a building named in his honor in Bethesda, Maryland.
A family spokesman said the injuries do NOT appear to be life-threatening.
The spokesman said Hatfield, 82, considered the senior statesman of Oregon politics, fell and struck his head in his daughter's home in Bethesda Wednesday evening after attending the dedication of a new National Institutes of Health building.
Hatfield was taken by ambulance to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and later transferred to Washington Hospital Center.
Doctors said it appears Hatfield did NOT have a stroke or heart attack responsible for the fall.
Hatfield is expected to remain hospitalized for several days.
When contacted, the McCoy family said they have no comment.
From another website:
"He keeled over backwards and struck his head on the floor," said Gerry Frank, a longtime friend who served as chief of staff to the former Republican senator.
Hatfield was taken by ambulance to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda and later transferred to Washington Hospital Center, where he was being treated in the intensive care unit, Frank said.
Doctors weren't sure what caused the fall, although they said it did not appear Hatfield had suffered a stroke or heart attack, Frank said.
"As far as we know it is not life-threatening. We are very hopeful there will be a full recovery," he said.
Hatfield was expected to remain hospitalized "for at least the next few days," he added.
Hatfield's son said late Thursday that his father is in stable condition.
"His spirits are strong, and we are grateful for all of the prayers from around the country," said Mark Hatfield Jr., who is a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration in Washington, D.C.
The elder Hatfield has had problems with his hearing in recent years, but otherwise has been in reasonably good health, Frank said.
Hatfield, a former Oregon governor, served 30 years in the Senate after he was first elected in 1966. The building he helped dedicate houses offices of the National Institutes of Health.

From Chapter 6 Unfit for Command - A Testimony of Lies
http://unfitforcommandchapter6.blogspot.com/
At the conclusion of the Winter Soldier Investigation, antiwar senator Mark Hatfield of Oregon was so impressed with the testimony that he insisted the transcript be inserted into the congressional record. Senator Hatfield also called for a military investigation into the charges that had been made. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) conducted the military inquiry.
Thanks for that link!
Here's the rest of that paragraph:
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) conducted the military inquiry. In his 1980 book America in Vietnam, Guenter Lewy noted that the NCIS questioned the identities of many of the witnesses who had appeared before the Winter Soldier Investigation. The most damaging finding consisted of the sworn statements of several veterans, corroborated by witnesses, that they had in fact not attended the hearing in Detroit. One of them had never been to Detroit in his life. He did not know, he stated, who might have used his name. As Lewy concluded, The VVAWs use of fake witnesses and the failure to cooperate with military authorities and to provide crucial details of the incidents further cast serious doubt on the professed desire to serve the causes of justice and humanity. It is more likely that this inquiry, like others earlier and later, had primarily political motives and goals.
This looks like material for another Swift Boat Vet ad!
During his 30 years in the senate he never once voted for a military appropriations bill but since 9/11 now fully backs President Bush on the war in Iraq. From Lars Larson e-mail
Maybe he's become a convert!
Ouch! I have known for many years that Mark Hatfield is a Christian but I didn't know that he had not voted for any of the military appropriation bills that came up in the Senate. I like this guy and am sorry for his injuries...just find it hard that he was a staunch dove.
Also a letter from 'Sen Star' going into detail as to why Joe Bangert's testimony sounds phony:

Thanks for the info!
Thanks to Interesting Times, who mans wintersoldier.com! Tremendous job.
The NCIS report effectively never got made, at least until it turns up.
Don't refer to it in any debate with Kerry spokesmen - some of them know the truth.
I don't agree with this. Gunter Lewy definitely saw the Naval Investigative Services report on the Winter Soldier Investigation, cited it, and summarized its contents in his 1977 book "America in Vietnam." This is a legitimate reference by a noted scholar, regardless of what happened to the NIS report after that...
Hatfield was in the US Navy during WWII and was one of the first of US personel to walk the grounds at Hiroshima. I suspect he was making a statement about the tradgedy of war but would have voted for the appropriations had something like 9/11 occurred on his watch. He has expressed that feeling since 9/11.
**He has expressed that feeling since 9/11.**
That's why I said that maybe he has been converted!
As it has been said, he was one of the first to tour the aftermath of Hiroshima. It had to have an affect, but it seems as though the 9-1-1 carnage did too.
Hope to see you back home soon Senator, we still need you.
