City Reconsiders Plan To Name Ferry "September 11th"
NY1 ^ | SEPTEMBER 22ND, 2004

The city is reconsidering plans to name a new Staten Island ferry boat the "September 11th," after an informal poll of riders found almost 80 percent are against it.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that he had not anticipated the opposition but will take it into consideration.

“Quite honestly, I was surprised at that,” the mayor said Tuesday. “I think there would be a lot of people in favor of naming it 9/11, but apparently there are not. So, we are in the process of trying to set up a process to get other input.”

The city Department of Transportation said that it's not sure what the next step will be, but added that the public will be given a chance to participate in the decision.

There's a bunch of names you could use to invoke the spirit of what happened to the country after 9/11:

Resilience
Resolve
Defiance

etc...

Two of the many ferries I take from NJ to NYC are called "Finest" and "Bravest". Very appropriate.

Once again the Mayor shows himself to be thinking-impaired. How about naming it the Titanic, Bloomie?

The Ferry can sail alongside the Aircraft Carrier "Pearl Harbor."

"Kerry the Ferry?"
A perfect name! The staten island ferry goes both ways. It has no front or back. Forever destined to just go back and forth, never anything new or different.

Or, for that matter, they could just call it the "Staten Island Ferry"...

If they want to remember 9/11, there's alternatives. They could name it the "Shanksville" to honor the heroes of Flight 93; they could name it the "Mychal Judge" after the FDNY chaplain who was one of the first FDNY to die (hit by a falling body). I'd rather they name it the "Osama's Dead, And We Couldn't Be F****** Happier," but that's too long to fit on the boat.

By all accounts Father Mychal was an exceptional human being, but that would be a political victory for the gay community, who decided that he was one of them after he died. There is no evidence whatsoever that Judge broke his vow of chastity, but he was very active in helping AIDS victims so they have decided that he is "The First Gay Saint." I am not making this up. Check out saintmychal.com BTW, NY Senator Hillary Clinton attended exactly ONE 9/11 funeral... You guessed it.

It can't - there is already a USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) in commission, and she's a landing ship (dock).

From the link above: "USS PEARL HARBOR is the last of the United States Navy's four new cargo variants of the WHIDBEY ISLAND class of Landing Dock Ships and is the first ship to carry the name Pearl Harbor and is named to commemorate the heroic actions of the members of the armed services as well as the citizens of the Island of Oahu during the attack on December 7, 1941."

In recent years carriers have been named for ex-presidents, but CVs were traditionally named for famous US battles. Not necessarily those in which the US was victorious - they remember the valor of those who fought.
