AT least 250 people died in massive floods across northern Haiti after Tropical Storm Jeanne hit the crushingly poor Caribbean nation over the weekend, a UN spokesman said today.
Meanwhile, authorities were without news from the country's second largest island, La Tortue.
Staff from the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) could not find the island of 26,000 people while flying over the region by helicopter.

Wait... are they saying that an entire island, with 26K people on it, has dissappeared? What am I missing here?

Is this a JOKE? It's almost like an Onion story... except if it's true, then it's one of the worst disasters in history!

I had the same reaction as you. I can't believe what I am reading.
But wait, it gets better. This thread was removed from breaking news. It could be the worst single-event disaster in my lifetime. But yeah, let the thread die out. Makes sense.

First it was reported that "the island of La Tortue off Haiti's north coast is barely visible under the water,", - I immediately thought the report was covering-up the fact that they couldn't find the island - just imagine not saying a word about the conditions of 26,000 people on an island barely above sea level and "barely visible under the water," ...
Yes, it seems this island has been wiped out from the surface of the earth

I would like clarification and or confirmation on this. If it is even remotely true, it is horrible beyond description. 26,000 people?

If anyone here has access to short wave radio or someone who uses SW, I would like to see if this can be confirmed directly from Haiti.

I am trying to find a news story online about it but so far nothing other than 500 dead in Haiti per Yahoo news.

I don't think so.
Just think about this : Jeanne is standing more or less still for the last 24 hours. If this would be happening 200 miles to the west, the Bahamas could have seen the same fate as La Tortue now ...

Looking at a topo map, this island has higher elevations of up to 464 feet . . . I'd be hard pressed to believe the whole thing is gone, unless something much bigger than a hurricane hit it . . . devastated is believable, but gone just seems far fetched . . . unless swallowed by the earthquake . . .

I don't believe the Bahamas are particularly susceptible to earthquakes.

I am doing some checking too, but I can't even confirm that the population there is 26,000. We need to know more about this Turtle Island.
Here's the free version of the article from the Encyclopædia Britannica:
Tortuga Island
French Île De La Tortue, Caribbean island off the northern coast of Haiti opposite Port-de-Paix. European adventurers settled Tortuga (Spanish: Turtle) in 1629, in conjunction with trying to establish a foothold on the neighbouring island of Hispaniola (now comprising Haiti and the Dominican Republic). Known as filibusters and buccaneers, these Brethren of the Coast harassed Spanish shipping.
