A Fighting Retreat: Rather Claims That Burkett Was In The "Texas Air Guard"
CBS "News" ^ | September 20, 2004 | Dan Rather

Posted on 09/20/2004 5:10:44 PM PDT by an amused spectator

In Mr. Rather's not-so-apologetic "apology" tonight, he made the claim that Bill Burkett was in the "Texas Air Guard".

It is my understanding that Burkett is a former lieutenant colonel in the Texas Army National Guard.

Why does Mr. Rather continue to try to dupe his listeners? An uninformed person watching Mr. Rather may jump to the conclusion that Mr. Burkett might actually have some familiarity with the Texas Air National Guard, and perhaps give some credence to Burkett's phony, shilly-shallying arguments.

Give it up, Dan. Either you're incompetent, like your boy Kerry keeps claiming about Dubya, or you're still on the partisan attack for the DNC.

Rather is a pitiful excuse for a human AND journalist so jaded by his hatred of the Bush family that he wasn't going to allow anything to stand in his way...especially the truth.

I thought Burkett was a former Army National Guard officer before he was brought into the Texas Air National Guard to help with some sort of reorganization. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding. In that case, you and CBS would both be right, I guess.

I did some checking, but I didn't see anything. I'll have to look around some more.

Today heard a CBS news reporter refer to Senator Kerry and Mr. Bush, They are such partisans that they can't even grant President Bush the proper title.

I have tried to get this corrected everywhere. Maybe we all need to keep after the media. That goes for Howard Kurtz, Michael Dobbs, Dan Rather, and all the media.

I also notice that even the more objective/conservative talk radio/TV pundits are not aware of the difference or even that there is a difference.

Quite a bit of the time, they leave out any qualifier with Burkett, saying Guard, Guardsman, National Guard. They are using their usual manipulative wording to cover their real agenda.

They are just trying to make it sound as if Burkett and President Bush served at the same time in the same unit, etc. It's pure manipulation.

Burkett's beef with W started while W was Governor of Texas, even though CBS keeps trying to twist the events.

From my reading of it, Burkett was NOT in the Texas Air National Guard:

"In news interviews earlier this year, Burkett said he overheard a telephone conversation in the spring of 1997 in which top Bush aides asked the head of the Texas National Guard to sanitize Bush's files as he was running for a second term as governor of Texas. Several days later, he said, he saw dozens of pages from Bush's military file dumped in a trash can at Camp Mabry, the Guard's headquarters." - Michael Dobbs

Basically, it sounds like the Texas Army National Guard and the Texas Air National Guard have a centralized Texas National Guard HQ, from which some degree of administration of both emanates.

That's my reading of it. Either that, or Rosanne RosannaDanner is going senile, and should be removed for incontinence incompetence.

Correct. Many staes operate this way.

In fact Bill Burkett was in the Texas Army Nat'l Guard. I had the (opportunity/misfortune/occasion) to work with him while conducting Army Nat'l guard business in Texas (Army Communities of Excellence training - Malcom Baldridge Award stuff that's fit to Army needs).

He did not at that time seem to be a Raging DUmmie.

Oh well - who knew.

I have a canned e-mail/post that I use to get that point across about Burkett and his affiliation.

I am so tired of the media thinking we're the stupid ones.

Yeah, ol' "Dem"mer Rather, speaking truth to power.

Us pajama people would find out pretty quick about power if we stopped over to Dan's Texas ranch or one of his swank Nor'east mansions for a chat.

"...I would willingly die for my country at a moment's notice and on the command of my president," says Rather.

More like, "I would willingly die for my country at a moment's notice and on the command of my Democrat president, unless I could hire a substitute like they did in the Civil War."

"Demmy" has been getting our boys killed in Afghanistan and Iraq since they went in.

Thanks, roaddog727, for your post and your service.

He did not at that time seem to be a Raging DUmmie.

Wonder if it's a Night Of The Living DUmmies thing - their eyes just glaze over at some point because he's George W. Bush, and the mindless stalking begins?

68skylark, check roaddog727's post #12. He explains things further. It must be that Burkett got involved with Air National Guard stuff peripherally at Camp Mabry - which is why he didn't pick up the lingo.

"That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where-if I knew then what I know now-I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question."

( Statement by Dan Blather after he owned up to his misrepresentation of the truth concerning these false documents!)

Yeah Dan if Pilate had known at the time he turned Jesus over to the Jews what he later found out was the truth he wouldn't have done it, you idiot.
