XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX MON SEPT 20, 2004 20:02:09 ET XXXXX
BUSH OFFICIALS WANT CBSNEWS MODERATOR OFF DEBATE Just hours after CBSNEWS admitted it cannot prove the authenticity of documents used in a 60 MINUTES story about President Bush's National Guard service, top Bush advisers are recommending a CBS reporter be removed as moderator of a planned presidential debate, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
At question is the approved Oct. 13 debate at Arizona State University in Tempe with Bob Schieffer, chief Washington correspondent for CBSNEWS, moderating.
"Considering the circumstances, we should definitely ask that Schieffer be replaced," a top Bush adviser told the president on Monday, according to a well-placed source.
The well-placed source continued: "Who can trust these CBS people to play it straight [during the debate]? I suspect they will be out for revenge."
The president is said to have not made any decision whether to seek a removal of the planned CBSNEWS moderator.
Developing...
Good insight.
Fair makes me want to go out and clear some brush. :)
Great! Why allow a reporter from a questionable, partisan news source moderate a presidential debate?
This is right. Get the Slimes off any involvement in the debates.
Meaning they'll take questions from the audience? DANG! I was hoping that the Miami Debate would be this way! That way I could get a chance to give them a question.....Yup....I've got a ticket.
ack!
It's time to turn the tables.. bring in Brit and show the country how BALANCED questions can be asked........ It's a great teaching opportunity..
You know, the whole world is watching this.. we need to bring in THE BEST minds to level the deepest questions and demand the diligence from each candidate.. no soft shoe answers, and a candidate should be able to then interact in a REAL one on one DEBATE with the other.. no just a scripted response...
Kerry, the left, should show WHO THEY REALLY ARE.... and let the country decide.............but they won't..
if they did, they'd still get 25% of the vote... the stupid and the anarchists would form a line.
"Would love to hear him ask Kerry, Is that your final answer???"
Imagine Kerry delivering a patented windbag equivocation of an answer to a leadoff question, and GW beginning his rebuttal with a smile...
You kidding? Bush is GREAT in that format. Kerry will not be able to restrain himself, and Gore's fate will befall him too.
I agree that it's not likely to force a change, but by making their displeasure with CBS known now Bush can take a more defiant stance toward their reporters later when they confront him with partisan questions.
I'm glad President Bush is willing to challenge these guys, and would like to see more of it. Remember 9/11.
Well, that's not quite what I had in mind!! LOL!!!!
TeamBush thought the debate commission had no way to determine if a participant was really an undecided and that many "fake" undecideds would be granted access.
Sort of like the CBS penchant for fake documents.
Bush is patient. "And we will bring justice to our enemies at a time of our choosing"...
When the inevitable September 11th questions come along, Bush should answer with "like Xmas 1968, it was seared into my memory..."
I'm an ol' IMan fan, but he has only lefties from the MSM. He says he "loves" them, but often he lets them hang themselves on their own petards. Frank Rich, Jonathan Alter are horrendible. I kinda enjoy Craig Crawford - he's lefty but clever.
There are some folks, IMan faves (e.g., McCain & Biden - not MSM, but from the nether region) that cause me to switch to 770WABC for Sliwa & Cuby or to the web (KRLA) for Bill Bennett. Gotta remember Imus is a showman and a registered Republican in very blue Manhattan.
It really doesn't matter if he is the moderator now...with the appearance of bias and the raising of the issue, he will be determined to appear objective. After all, CBS news will be fightring for credibility.
I've been saying for a long time that the GOP, specifically a GOP president, should directly challenge the liberal media; call a press conference, declare it urgent, then on live TV announce that enough is enough. Give a few glaring examples, then hand out and post on the web a document that provides irrefutable empirical evidence of the staggering bias. Then, in front of a live national audience, challenge them to stop it.
They will NEVER have a better time than now, when CBS not only was so desperate to trash Bush as to use forged docs, but the producer was also making connections to facilitate the DNC's ability to trash Bush.
I have no hope that this will happen, but it would be oh so beautiful, and it's so desperately overdue.

RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie Statement on CBS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Christine Iverson
202-863-8614
Washington, DC--Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie issued the following statement on CBSs admission today that memos regarding the Presidents National Guard service are not real.
We accept CBS's apology for a breach of the journalistic standards that provide the American people confidence in news organizations, but some disturbing questions remain unanswered.
CBS has now answered questions about the authenticity of the documents but questions remain surrounding who created the documents, who provided them to CBS and if Senator Kerry's supporters, Party committee, or campaign played any role.
Did Bill Burkett, Democrat activist and Kerry campaign supporter, who passed information to the DNC, work with Kerry campaign surrogate Max Cleland? Did Bill Burkett's talks with senior Kerry campaign officials include discussions of the now discredited documents? Was the launch of the Democrat National Committee's Operation Fortunate Son designed with knowledge of the faked forged memos? Terry McAuliffe said yesterday that no one at the DNC or Kerry campaign, had anything to do with the preparations of the documents, but what about the distribution or dissemination?
In an effort to regain the trust of the American people CBS should not only investigate the process that led to the use of these documents but they should identify immediately those engaged in possible criminal activity who attempted to use a news organization to affect the outcome of a Presidential election in its closing days.
