Family friends were seen coming and going from John Hensley's house, as news spread that a Web site posting had claimed one of the American hostages in Iraq was beheaded Monday.
An al-Qaida linked group threatened in a videotape Saturday to behead two Americans and a Briton within 48 hours. The videotape was the first word on the fate of the 48-year-old Hensley, fellow American Eugene Armstrong and Briton Kenneth Bigley since the three construction workers were kidnapped from their Baghdad home Thursday.
The claim in the posting, which did not identify which man was killed, could not be verified.
The short statement was posted by a Web site contributor using the pseudonym Abu Maysara al-Iraqi, who has put up past statements signed in the name of the Tawhid and Jihad group. The posting promised video proof "soon."
Al-Zarqawi "has beheaded the first American. The group will next behead the others," the statement said.
A police barricade was set up on the leafy suburban street in Marietta that ends with a cul-de-sac, as local officers stopped all vehicles, trying to prevent reporters and television cameras from getting any closer to the Hensleys' home Monday afternoon. Dozens of media vehicles were parked along the otherwise quiet street leading up to the checkpoint near Hensley's modest ranch home.
Earlier in the day, Jack Hensley's wife, Patty, told ABC's "Good Morning America" in a taped interview that her husband had always been optimistic about his work in Iraq and in his safety. But that had changed during the past week or so, she said.
Security guards who had been with the workers in Iraq morning and night stopped showing up for work, she said. She says her husband told her, "If they did, they had an excuse and they needed to leave."
On NBC's "Today" show Monday, Ty Hensley said his brother, who went to Iraq in February after failing to find construction work and needed money to support his family, recently wrote home saying he was being "staked out" and that the guards feared for their own safety.
"One told him, 'I have to leave this work, or they will kill me,'" Ty Hensley said.
Patty Hensley also appeared on Al-Jazeera television Monday, saying she believed her husband, like all Americans in Iraq, was there to help the Iraqi people.
Patty Hensley told ABC that the couple raised their 13-year-old daughter to believe that everybody in the world is good.
"Her first question to me is, `Why would anybody hurt my daddy?' I can't explain," she said.
In Marietta, Hensley's family has asked for privacy. A family spokesman who answered the phone at the Hensley home declined comment to The Associated Press.
I have to say that I don't think these barbaric rituals will ever stop unless met with something of equal ferociousness.
This is by no means intended as an endorsement of monsterous atrocities like Saddam carried out as examples to terrify and ultimately crush his country into subserviance.
But you have to wonder at the sensibilities of human beings that will saw the heads off innocent men, gun down fleeing toddlers screaming for their mothers and use every ounce of ingenuity to try to decimate as many men, women and children within their home and work communities.
These subhuman,vile creatures will never be deterred by a legal system of appeal after appeal and the threat of imprisonment--not even capital punishment which is mandated to be dealt out efficiently and as humanely as possible.
Unfortunately, they apparently only are stirred by like atrocious cruelty--and then they become simpering cowards.
Really makes one muse at the idea of a publicly sawing off of one the insurgent's heads off as an example of what will come to any other captured terrorist seeking to destroy the country. Welcome to the dark ages.

I made the mistake of watching a video of a Russian soldier getting beheaded in Chechnya and then I watched the Berg one also.

I watched Daniel Pearl's, and that was enough for me. My understanding it was about the tames one, because the skipped the actual murder part.
That was all I needed to see, what's it been 2 years, an I can still see the image in my mind.
This is insanity...pure and simple. How do we ever expect to change things until we make them FEAR us?
How have we forgotten that a major component in our victory in WWII was the willingness to accept collateral damage to the cities that harbor our enemies? The old "hearts and minds" thing just doesn't work. Lots of people are going to have to die to change this. I'd rather it be "them" rather than "us".

Don't watch it!!!! I have no plans to myself as I thought I could handle watching Berg's and to this day I haven't go over it. It brought me to tears and I nearly threw up myself. I have always thought that i could handle that kind fo stuff, but i can't and i don't think anyone else can either, exspecially you people w/weak stomachs, and sensitive hearts.

It may sound simplistic to overeducated city folk, but then, they are a little further from nature than the rest of us.
I agree,their culture truly respects nothing except force and might. We can't defeat them by trying to understand them,nor by trying to be humane. These animals can only be defeated by being destroyed,obliberated from the earth,by whatever means neccessary. They don't even deserve anything more,and we won't defeat them by doing less than killing them,the more publicly and remorselessly the better.
