EXCLUSIVE

STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:

Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in question—and their source—vigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.

Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where—if I knew then what I know now—I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.

But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.

Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.

What a crock ... and why Mr Rather did you go forth with an interview with a secretary that admitted the documents were fake just because you knew she would agree with the 'substance' of the fake memo's as she is an avid Kerry supporter?

I believe your retraction and apology as much as a Baghdad Bob's testimony that there were no US military in baghdad. You are a liar, left leaning, will do anything to support your candidate to hell with the truth propaganda pushing wanker! If CBS doesn't let you go, then we all need to continue strongly whatever boycott of that network that is just starting to surface.

Walter Cronkite - "And that's the way it is......"

Dan Rather - "And that's the way I wanted it to be......."

Dan's replacement - "And that's the way CBS ended......"

From Rather's statement:

"Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. "

Don't you think it would have been a good idea to apply this kind of scrutiny before you put this joke of a story on the air?

I have no sympathy for this disgraced "journalist".

I hope he stays on at CBS because it's going to cost them dearly. When his ratings tank some more, and stay in the tank, they'll give him his cynaide pill.

WHERE IS THE APOLOGY TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE ATTEMPT TO DESTROY HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

UNFAIR DAN, UNFAIR DAN

This does not restore CBS credibility because CBS did not even acknowledge that they maligned falsely the President of the United States during a re-election campaign.

I expect far more from CBS.

So, of course, Dan will get right on Kerry to release ALL his service records... NOT!

If the statement, as reported by Drudge, is accurate, then this situation will dominate the news for the next few weeks even more than it already has.

The situation will not quiet until Rather leaves his anchor position and the source of the documents has been uncovered. A statement like the one Drudge is claiming will be released only aligns CBS with the conspirators and escalates the issues rather than resolving them.

This alleged statement reminds me of Maurice Chevalier's apology for collaborating with the Nazis during their occupation of France, which he finished up by breaking into song and flashing his winning smile. Too little, too late.

"I find we have been misled..."

Hey! So do I!

But I was misled by an arm of the main stream media.

Guess we both should have known better.
