EXCLUSIVE
STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:
Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in questionand their sourcevigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.
Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point whereif I knew then what I know nowI would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.
They came on the same day!!
He didn't apologize for the crime, he just said that he was sorry. (for getting caught, not for deceiving)
You posted a picture of Rosanne Rosanna Danna - her catchphrase was "it's always something"
Emily Latella is the one that used to say "Nevermind"
Both characters were played by Gilda Radner
They're only upset because they got caught, and still trying to make excuses as plausible as those my two year old grandson comes up with. His favorite (when caught red handed, holding whatever he's not supposed to be holding) is : "It wa'ant me".
Question? Motives? Dance around it all you want, Greenberg, conservatives gave the entire media facts concerning why this document was bogus.
dan rather will not get a dog park named after him.
Here's the official, detailed release from CBS:

So Kerry gives the big Iraq speech today and the coverage since has been all about CBS with undoubtably more to come. This story will remain in the news until Burkett says he made the memos up or tells who he received them from.
"Carl Cameron was just on Fox saying Maxie confirmed there was contact with Burkett. He also stated said that Kerry was pushing this 60 Minutes piece as a "must see" to his traveling press for several weeks PRIOR to it coming out. Carl Cameron, as we all know, is one of them traveling with Kerry. This confirms with The Hill's article on the DNC producing the Fortunate Son bit with the CBS memos. So, what comes first - Rather's hit piece or the DNC's hit piece."
That doesn't surprise me one bit. I suspected the campaign had been planned over the summer, or maybe even spring. There were rumors that Kerry was mad at McAuliffe for springing the NG trap early, back in Feb itself.
I'd like to know who the architects of the campaign were. It was planned quite cleverly but it was not clever enough. It has a Rovian touch but who's his evil twin on the DNC side?
"WE".....What a laff, trying to lay off the blame on unseen others.
How crazy then is the statement that the documents cannot be authenticated? Burkett has told them they are forged!!! So the statement should just say the documents are forged. This is Orwellian.
Watch Fox News ratings go through the ROOF!
You're wrong, and I have documents that say so. =P
XXX is okay, but Mud is a three letter name too.
Oops! that will offend Mud boy Slim. Maybe Nil which is zero, would be a better choice.
A major media network, using airways owned by the American public, has (deliberately?) attempted to smear a sitting US President using fraudulent documents, fraudulent and recanting "witnesses", and bogus "experts", while ignoring ANY and ALL principal players who hold even the slightest pro-Bush opinion -- all in an obvious effort to sway an election to the candidate of THEIR choice, John F'n. Kerry.
After the apology is delivered, the SeeBS license should be suspended and the FCC should investigate thoroughly (yeah, fat chance).
Note to SeeBS: This is what happens when you WANT a story to be true so badly that your own leftist ideology drives your a$s over a cliff.
