EXCLUSIVE
STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:
Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in questionand their sourcevigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.
Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point whereif I knew then what I know nowI would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.
Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.
Dan is taking the fall to protect someone
WHO'S THE SOURCE DAN????
They could NEVER authenticate the docs. They only ever had copies.
Wow! What a model of journalistic exemplication! To see a corporate media supposedly devoted to bringing us the "inside scoop" dragging out it's inside scoop in agonizingly slow docudrama progression. It's the new "reality TV!" It's the big media, having a 100% monopoly on this inside scoop, acting like it wants to engage in a month-long casual foreplay in reporting the news with the public-at-large.
That's precisely what he should have said. They are still in cover-up mode.
Things like this is why I stopped watching MSM many years ago.
Gunga dan and SeeBS are still in denial, trying to make the sheeple feel sorry for them.
FORGERIES! Apology to PRESIDENT BUSH needs to be forthcoming!!!
It's one thing to be wrong, but its another to be arrogantly dismissive of the opposition's intelligence, while you are demonstrably and conclusively wrong.
Nothing like watching somebody fall on their ass while doing the "superior dance".
>>>>In order for him to eat crow, there has to be at least a modicum of humility--and I don't see it in that statement. Not even a hint of an apology. Infuriating.
"We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry."
Dan Rather
Rather may not have gone far enough for you, but he did apologize.
PRESIDENT BUSH, I APOLOGIZE.
CBS News executives (shown above) return to the Commissary for a hearty lunch of funnel cakes after making Dan Rather come to his senses. Insiders report that Mr. Rather was repeatedly subjected to dousings of buckets-full of ice-cold confetti until he signed the statement.
Exactly. You are exactly correct. They were trying to help Kerry. All these media pundits, even the conservative ones who are saying they messed up only because they wanted to break the story first are sugar coating it because they are professional colleagues with Rather and his crew. But knowing how liberal Mapes and Rather are, there is NO doubt in my mind that they wanted to help Kerry during "dump slime on Bush week." I do not believe it was an honorable mistake.
Is the list in your post (#45) your own? I just heard Rush go through your list almost verbatim.
Elvis gave the memos to Judge Crater.
Skypilot just changed his screen name to DirtDiver. Howlin, were you saying that there was a second CBS statement?
But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism

OH-MY-LORD
CBS=DNC=COMMUNISTS
On CNN, Jeff Greenfield is also pointing at Burkett by name on this.
Well Said!
They are continuing to cripple Kerry by this non-apology apology. Let them... a death of a thousand cuts.
So weasely that he couldn't even make this statement on camera.
