How do you get the full story on Iraq? (Blogs?)

A fella named George Bush said today: I just got to keep talking and word of mouth, there’s blogs, there’s internet, there’s all kinds of way to communicate which is literally changing the way people get their information and so if you’re concerned I would suggest that you reach out to some of the groups that are supporting the troops, that got internet sites and just keep the word moving.

Chris Bowers at MyDD says that the "right-wing blogosphere" is dead. He must be right because he repeats the claim several times. And John Aravosis agrees with him.

Bowers' oft-repeated conclusion is silly-- "Blogging," really, is a silly thing to talk about. "Blog" software is just that--software. Who cares? The internet is a medium of great power, whether one is writing on a "blog," a MSM site like National Review or the Weekly Standard, an op-ed section in a daily newspaper, or whatever. Likewise with the radio, podcasting and television--all media which we use to get the conservative message out. Having said that, one thing is unique about the "blog"--its unmediated immediacy. We (and other bloggers) bang these posts out fast, and say what we think, for better or--in the case of the lefty bloggers--worse. Lots of people like that. It's an intimate medium, and they get to know us.

An Appropriate Denouement

The Washington Post experiment in hosting a conservative political blog has come to at least a momentary halt, as Ben Domenech has resigned in the face of allegations of plagiarism. Jim Brady explains on Post.blog: When the hysteria gave way to real problems -- and if this list at the Blogometer is representative, Domenech has serious issues -- Brady took the proper action in starting an investigation.  Comments (2)

THE DOMENECH DEBACLE

I just got home from Pittsburgh and am late heading out the door for the Abdul Rahman event in D.C., but I can't let this blog sit silent about the plagiarism debacle now engulfing young conservative Ben Domenech, the Washington Post's "Red America" blogger.

I cheered for Ben, the editor of my last book at Regnery, when he announced his new position. I criticized unhinged bloggers on the Left who leveled vicious ad hominem attacks against him. It's clear, as the good folks at Red State (which Ben co-founded) note, that his detractors were on a search-and-destroy mission from the get-go.

But now the determined moonbat hordes have exposed multiple instances of what clearly appear to me to be blatant lifting of entire, unique passages by Ben from other writers. It is one thing to paraphrase basic facts from a wire story. But to filch the original thoughts and distinctly crafted phrases of a writer without crediting him/her--and doing so repeatedly--is unacceptable in our business. Some of the cases occurred while Ben was in college; he is blaming an editor for these transgressions. But at least one other incident involved a piece he wrote for NRO after he graduated. The side-by-side comparisons of these extensive passages is damning.

I certainly understand the impulse on the Right to rally around Domenech. But I can't ignore the plain evidence. And the charges can't be dismissed as "lies" or jealousy attributed to Ben's age.

As someone who has worked in daily journalism for 14 years, I have a lot of experience related to this horrible situation: I've had my work plagiarized by shameless word and idea thiefs many times over the years. I've also been baselessly accused of plagiarism by some of the same leftists now attacking Ben.

The bottom line is: I know it when I see it. And, painfully, Domenech's detractors, are right.

Conservative blogger Rick Moran weighs in. And Junkyard Blog.

UNC-Chapel Hill Attacker's Islamic Justification

Here’s the full text of the UNC-Chapel Hill car-attack jihadi’s suicide letter, found in his apartment after the attack: Mohammed Taheri-Azar’s letter to police. (Hat tips: rayra and zombie.)   link: 343 comments

I find it fascinating the way this got publicized in a matter of minutes. This is the true power of the blogosphere and the new media ecosystem:

- Editor at small newspaper in NC decides to print the full text of the letter.

- Someone -- probably a NC local -- sees the article and posts it unattributed on a gun-owners forum.

- Rayra sees it there and reposts it on LGF, asking for verification that it's real.

- zombie finds the original text online, and another source confirming it.

- zombie sends links to Charles.

- Charles posts it as a thread on LGF.

- 100,000 people see the thread, and read the letter.

...and all of this happened in the space of a couple hours.

- (in the future) scores and scores of lesser blogs will reprint the letter after seeing it on LGF

- the ripples continue to spread outward.

Behold the power of the "newstream media."

A couple of comments. First the politically correct media is keeping this story strictly low-profile. Even with a suicide note that details his Islamist reasoning behind the attack, this story is bound for the back pages, like Fujallah, Sadaams trial, 911 images, anything that provides substance to the war on terror is suppressed while stories like "illegal immigrants rights", gay marriage, affirmative action, welfare, global warming, ANWAR, mad cows disease, election disenfrachisement, and any other issue a liberal can think of is headline news.

The myth of impartiality

According to the Drudge Report, Good Morning America producer John Green is "mortified" that he was caught with his pants down in an email he wrote to others at ABC that President Bush made him want "to puke." Frankly, Green should not be so upset. This is his opinion and he's welcome to it in a free society. The idea that he would be impartial is simply a myth. Last I heard John Green was a human being. Only machines (so far) are impartial. In fact, it's good viewers of ABC are informed of the opinions of those producing the network's shows. It gives those viewers much more ability to evaluate what they are seeing. Thanks, Mr. Green!

Blog of the Week: Big Lizards

Dafydd ab Hugh must have been one of the first people outside our immediate families to read Power Line. We got to know him long ago, and have often reproduced his very perceptive emails to us, as well as noting his comments on other sites. It was clear for a long time that Dafydd needed his own site, and we kept hearing that he was working on it. Finally, it came into being: Big Lizards, one of the most graphically spectacular and politically astute sites on the web.

Dafydd is a somewhat reclusive fellow. Rumor has it that he's a science ficton writer. I haven't been able to learn much else about Dafydd... http://www.biglizards.net/blog/  :

Media's Defensive War

Hatched by Sachi

President Bush is finally on offense again. He has realized that not only we are at war against global terrorism, but we are also at war against the anti-war, anti-American Antique Media, which -- whether subconsciously or with deliberation -- takes the side of our enemies. The MSM knows that their domination of American opinion is in trouble. When Gayle Taylor complained that no major media was interested in showing the DVD full of "good news" that her Army journalist husband Kent had collected during his year in Iraq, the President of the United States openly suggested that she turn to bloggers. Wthin 48 hours, several popular bloggers were reporting the story, including Power Line. The result: CNN's Anderson Cooper and MSNBC's Chris Matthews swiftly invited the Taylors onto their respective shows, Anderson Cooper 360 and Hardball (to see video of the latter, go here  Comments (15) | "Indeed, it's hard not to conclude that they think the first [America defeated] is a small price to pay for the second [Bush humbled]."

Perhaps it is time for last night's CSPAN report. I watched Edwin Feulner give a talk on his book Getting it Right in America on Book TV.

During the talk he specifically mentioned participation in the blogosphere as a crucial component of preserving our government.

Free Markets, Empirical Science and a belief in life not death have given us the ability to participate in a way never before thought possible. The Whacko's are beside themselves trying to regulate and stifle the internet.
