The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades believes in the fundamental right for civil discourse, freedom of speech and activism to support our candidates and issues.
What happened in Huntington, West Virginia yesterday is an affront to everything we, as a union, pride ourselves to represent. We extend our apologies to the Parlock family, especially Sophia, for the distress one of our overzealous members caused them.
I have personally taken steps to address this issue internally, and will take immediate disciplinary action to the fullest extent allowed under U.S. Department of Labor regulations and the constitution of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.
It is my hope that this incident reminds all of our members that every last citizen in this country has the right to express his or herself freely. Not one single one of us has the right to tell them otherwise.

Bump.
I give the guy and the union credit. Then again, it is extremely bad PR for them, so they HAD to do something. Nevertheless, it is a good move on their part.
Good enough for me. I was one of the original naysayers on this. I'm happy I was wrong.
Karl Rove runs IUPAT, didn't you know that?
not accepted!! anyone have phone numbers?
I give the man due respect for the apology.
Can't ask for more than this, at this time. A follow-up to see what was done to the cretin would be welcome.
I hope someone goes over to DU and posts this apology.
Classy response from the Union. I was involved (in my young, liberal college days) in a Dukakis rally outside of a GHW Bush speech event. Pro-GHW Bush thugs from the Theta Chi fraternity (yes, republicans have thugs too) plunged through the crowd of protesters ripping up signs and screaming at 4'10" women who were protesting GHW Bush.
Good for them.
The DUmmies have just sent their entire dossier to IUPAT and, they claim, they have been told that IUPAT will issue another statement after they have reviewed the information.
Not good enough.
Good. I hope they keep this story alive for a few more cycles. No way they'll win on this issue. I still want the jerk named so we can show some appreciation for his efforts.
Way to go Freepers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Overzealous? Overzealous??
The guy was a &(%%#^#$ bully. And a coward. It isn't just a lack of b**ls that allows a grown man to pick on a little girl. It requires the lack of a brain and not even a passing familiarity with the concept of right and wrong.
Let me guess, for disciplinaray action an "Atta-boy!" in the lunch room or maybe a round at happy hour? For a union thug ripping up a 3 year old girl's sign?
So much for the lies trotted out by DU that this was a set up.
