Senior Chinese leaders in the Central Military Command -- second in power only to President Jiang Zemin -- have predicted war with Taiwan within the next five years.
Beijing's next five-year economic plan began this year, meaning Zhang's threat falls within the plan's 2001-2006 time frame.

Right on schedule. China seems to require some kind of intramural armed conflict every 50 years or so.
And these items could not be built somewhere else?

Well, we already know the U.S. can't be trusted and doesn't keep it's word, so I suppose there's a good chance we'll just let Taiwan swing.
Okay, I know that it is the usual tyrant line that some other nation "once belonged to us" (Hitler with Austria, Hussein with Kuwait). But it's pretty clear that Taiwan was, and probably still is, part of mainland China. China just decided to get their own house in order before trying to reestablish order in Taiwan (boy, communism works so well that it takes sixty years!).
There is a reason that the United States and the United Nations does not recognize Taiwan as an independent sovereign nation. Just as retaining what is our's was one of several reasons we fought the Civil War, China does not believe Taiwan has the right to secede and perhaps is justified in trying to reclaim it.
What military advantage does it give them to have Taiwan?
What I mean is I would prefer to not fight a two-front war (one being China, the other being terrorism . . .which we all know is basically based in the Middle East). History has proven two front wars do not work well . . . Napoleon, Hitler, etc.

Well, I thought it's primarily the army and marines that are busy. I don't see a lot of work for the Navy in land-locked Iraq and Afghanistan. I would think we could afford a couple of aircraft carriers, but maybe they're busy elsewhere, too. *shrug*
Well, to the Chinese (CCP) way of thinking, since Chinese nationals have set foot on U.S. soil, that means the U.S. is now part of China and always will be.
if we are going to go to war with china, we should really do it before the entire semiconductor industry is offshored there - it would kind of be nice to have some chips available to put into our bombs and missiles and such, don't you think?
china has a long term strategy to defeat the United States - economically at first which in turns undermines our military, through espionage, through use of proxy nuclear states like north korea, etc.
and we sit around on our asses and allow these insane free trade agreements to suck our economic might away to china. we deserve what's coming to us years down the road, Taiwan is just s small piece of low hanging fruit for China.
well if you knew how much fire power that we keep dumping into the region you would understand that their is a problem...
It's not like we haven't told them that an attack on Taiwan will bring a respose from us.
Ignorance here . . . why are we dumping any firepower into the region?

Are they allowed to have their own weapons or is the populace generally unarmed? When it's laudible to be willing to defend one's nation, if they don't have anything to do it with, it doesn't really count for much. They may not have time to have weapons distributed to them by the government.
I have never figured out why the Chinese are always foaming at the mouth over Taiwan. (And I'm not unfamiliar with the history behind the whole situation.)
Sadly, after Chaing seized power in Taiwan, one of the first things he did -- as dictators are wont to do -- was outlaw firearms. Now that the Kuo Min Tang is finally out of power, the freedom to own firearms has still not been restored. No real surprise there. However, Taiwan's military takes these matters very seriously, and I would not be surprised if there are emergency plans in place to arm the populace.
Because if China attacks Taiwan, that would have HUGE economic problems for us... so we have been dumping alot of firepower over there for years offsetting China, why do you think China keeps building up? Then we add more, its like the Cold War all over again
