CBS EXECS CONCERN OVER VIEWERSHIP PLUNGE; RATHER RATINGS FADE IN MAJOR MARKETS

CBS executives on both coasts have become concerned in recent days that Dan Rather's EVENING NEWS broadcast has plunged in the ratings since the anchor presented questionable documents about Bush's National Guard service.

NIELSEN numbers released this week show Rather fading and trailing his rivals in every Top 10 city, other than San Francisco, with audience margins in some cities running more than 6 to 1 against CBS!

Executives fear many voters inclined to vote for Bush are now switching off Rather.

"The audience appears to becoming polarized," a top CBS source said from LOS ANGELES on Thursday. "Rightly or wrongly, we're being perceived as 'anti-Bush,' which I do not think is fair to Dan, who is a fine journalist... of course we do not like to see the ratings coming back the way they are this week."

In Philadelphia, the nation's #4 market, Rather pulled a 2.6 rating/5 share on Tuesday night against ABC's 13.3 rating/23 share and NBC's 4.0/7.

In Chicago, Rather hit a 2.3/5 to ABC's 9.2/20.

CBS trailed ABC by more than 2 to 1 in Los Angeles.

And in the nation's top market, New York, Rather finished not only behind NBC NIGHTLY NEWS and ABC WORLD NEWS TONIGHT -- but also pulled less audience than reruns of the SIMPSONS, WILL & GRACE and KING OF QUEENS.

Rather finished dead last in New York during the 6:30 pm timeslot among all broadcast channels tracked by NIELSEN on Tuesday.

But but but the sponsors have all said they're not worried, that they're receiving negligible number of complaints and don't anticipate changing where they place their ads. So how can this be?

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Good move. Wait for the live thread. No need to give either O'Reilly or Rather ratings.

Hmm... I don't buy it. I'd suspect Rather's ratings have been quite high this past week. Most people can't resist slowing down to stare at a trainwreck...

I share this suspicion.

Just to let you know that today I got an email response fromt the operations manager at the local CBS radio affiliate here in Lexington KY. He said he had just notified CBS today that they are cancelling them, when their contract expires end of December. So hitting the local affiliates does have an impact. Also, got a nice letter back from the station manager of the local CBS TV station. He said he is very concerned and has forwarded my email, along with the others to CBS in NY.

Couple this with pressure on their sponsors... and I think we know how this will turn out.

I did my part this a.m. with e-mails...will follow through with my wallet from now on. Most definitely, the pressure hasn't yet begun from their sponsors...perhaps within a week it just might, lol.

That's true.

When I was very young, the local news was 15 minutes, followed by the "CBS Evening News with Douglas Edwards."

30 minutes and out. Done.

Of course, we had a morning and evening paper, and there were about a dozen or more papers in NYC.

I cannot tell you whether or not the TV news was biased. I was still in my single digits!

"What is most amazing to me is that the usual defenders of liberal bias and the like are squarely aligned with the this-is-out-and-out-fraud crowd."

Don't be amazed; they are irate with Rather for impeaching their greatest tool of demogoguery, the network news organizations. They know that without the Ba'athist wing of the media to back up their lies, they're sunk; and they fear that with Rather they have a gaping hole in the hull.

A parallel can be drawn to the reaction to the Clinton's looting the White House on their way out: as the New York Slimes may have said, "its fine to perjure, rape, murder and commit treason, but when you steal the White House silver you make US look bad you lowlife trailer trash!"

Don't worry...they'll get over it.

No, the audienced is becoming informed and the Old Media just can't get away with the crap they used to for so long.
