Bush: A man for all seasons
By FRANCIS BROADHURST
"I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, Those of mechanics, each one singing his as if it should be blithe and strong, The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
...The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing
On the steamboat deck,
...The wood-cutter's song, the ploughboy's on his way in the morning,
Or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or the young wife at work
...Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day - at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs."
- Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass"
I watched the Democratic and Republican national conventions.
What I heard from the Democrats was a sad, pessimistic and foul-mouthed degradation of President Bush, his administration, his cabinet and the war against terrorism. They were particularly hostile to pre-emptive strikes against Afghanistan, where terrorists trained, then Iraq which supported terrorists, murdered their own people and thumbed their noses at the United Nations and the United States. I heard America whining.
Last week, Republicans gathered to nominate George W. Bush. And I heard America singing. It was the America I have known and loved since childhood - a nation of optimists and working men and women who care more for their families and their neighbors than about partisan politics. They reflected the country of which Walt Whitman sang in "Leaves of Grass" and in "Democratic Vistas."
I have listened to the "Anybody-But-Bush" crowd shouting and protesting their way into the spotlight like moths drawn to a light. As obnoxious as they have been, they have not put out the light nor, after listening to the speeches that rocked Madison Square Garden last week, do I expect them to extinguish the beacon of hope that President Bush represents.
The speakers did poke fun at Kerry and his supporters. Sen. Zell Miller, the man who took Georgia back from segregationist Lester Maddox and his pick ax gang, ripped Kerry apart for his mean-spirited attacks against the President during wartime, and he criticized the Massachusetts senator for his 20-year voting record in Congress.
The ex-Marine took nothing away from Kerry's service in Vietnam, but correctly took him to task for hateful anti-war protest rhetoric after he came back from Vietnam. Miller, Sen. John McCain, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rudy Giuliani, Tommy Franks and the middle class and minority spokesmen who addressed the convention kept their eyes on the future and expressed repeatedly the invigorating optimism Ronald Reagan brought back to the White House and the nation during his two terms.
The Kerry-folk trashed the city, the flag, carried protest signs, swore, dropped their pants and tried to close down the city with their bad-tempered tantrums. They even dusted off the old street theater of the protest days of 30 years ago, holding mock die-ins, carrying coffins and acting like spoiled brats.
They were annoying, but not very mature or effective.
President Bush was both mature and effective. Moreover, he expressed the optimism of the America I know which still exists among the common folk who fight our wars, tend our sick and wounded and create the jobs that keep our economy moving.
Unlike whiners and complainers on the other side, with their drumbeat of nasty negatives and unfounded accusations and charges, George W. Bush - man of faith, American optimist - hears America singing.

In the midst of liberal Massachusetts, a conservative voice is heard. Let's give him some encouragement!

Very nice. Liberals love Walt Whitman, but he's a real man of the people and a patriot, not a snobby fake like J.F'n.K.

The writer is (like Jeff Jacoby of the Boston Globe) a 'token conservative'. It takes guts to be in that position.....and we need to acknowledge that courage.
And as you say...it is a nice reminder of a great Republican Convention!

Good article Julie...
"The media want Kerry to win. Theyre going to portray Kerry and Edwards as being young and
dynamic and optimistic, and this glow is going to be worth maybe 15 points."

MRC Tell The Truth! 2004 Campaign Statement
June 18, 2004
Brent Bozell
The national liberal news media are participating in a campaign of partisan viciousness not seen since the days of Ronald Reagan, tossing any pretense of objectivity aside, distorting the truth, and simply refusing to report real news that doesnt fit their political agenda.
This must stop. Its time to demand that the news media Tell the Truth!
The country has been through a recession, and the worst terrorism attack in our history, and two wars all since just 2001. And yet our economy is now booming. Ten straight months of growth. 1.4 million new jobs since August. The US economy over the past four quarters has grown faster than at any time in the past 20 years. All this and a massive tax cut, too.
And what of the War on Terrorism? Weve toppled the terrorist regime in Kabul. Weve ended the murderous regime of Saddam Hussein. Terrorists the world over are on the run. Or in prison. Or dead. The American homeland has been safe since 9-11.
Sure, things could be better. Things can always be better. But by any stretch this is a time to be optimistic. And yet youd never know that reading the papers or watching the evening news. Day after day, night after night the news media question, denounce or just plain ignore the good news. They want higher taxes to fund massive new federal spending for more liberal experiments like socialized health care. They want America and the world to see our military as corrupt and barbaric. And theyll denounce anyone or anything that stands in the way of that message.
According to a Pew Research Center for People and the Press poll of the national news media published this spring, the media themselves admit their bias. By a factor of 5-1 they label themselves as liberal over conservative. The public is on to this bias. By a factor of 2-1 Americans believe there is a leftist tilt to the news media. But many Americans dont realize the extent to which the liberal media are slanting the news. 2004 is a critical year for America. Americans need to see exactly how the press is distorting the truth.
Today the MRC is announcing the launch of a massive $2.8 million Tell the Truth! campaign to reach 50 million Americans every week between now and the end of the year with the evidence of the news medias leftist tilt.
