Wasn't it reported Burkett had a nervous breakdown and blamed Bush? Doesn't it make sense the DNC would seek out someone of questionable mental stability to be their fallguy?

Burkett is the FALL guy, it's someone MUCH closer to the Kerry camp than this guy. There's NO WAY Rather would have said it was an "unimpeachable source" for this kook. Nor would he have worked so hard to try to dodge this.
No, he may be the "sacrificial goat" they offer up, but he's NOT the one who did this. It's likely 'Ol Terry boy, or Carville, or Rather's own daughter. Someone that he'd LITERALLY put his entire career, and the entire dnCBS news organization in jeopardy of collapsing for.

You are correct on that. But also it does not make any sense that the records are from Bush's files. They are supposed to be from Killian's private file. I am sure Killian would create a CYA memo and stick it in Bush's file.
No one has explained how Killian's supposed files were obtained.
I have the feeling that Rove knows who the players are. Why else did the WH call out the DNC and Kerry campaign today?

Bill Burkett, a Democrat activist near Abilene, said Sanchez, Sharp and other candidates need to be reminded that they can't run the party as if they own it.

Of course you're right; let's see if Burkett is going to take the fall for all of them.

It depends on whether you mean "source" to be the forger or the faxer.
Burkett could *easily* have been the patsy chosen to fax the documents.
...But Burkett doesn't explain Dan Rather calling CBS' source "unimpeachable" and likewise doesn't explain why CBS is willing to take the fall rather than reveal who's behind the forgeries.

Texas Democrat operatives linked to possible memo source

The New York Times is reporting that Bill Burkett, a disgruntled former national guardsman and longtime peddler of anti-Bush conspiracy theories involving the president's Texas Air National Guard Service, is connected in an undisclosed manner and extent to the CBS forged memos scandal. Says the Times:
CBS has refused to say how it obtained the documents. But one person at CBS, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed a report in Newsweek that Bill Burkett, a retired National Guard officer who has charged that senior aides to then-Governor Bush had ordered Guard officials to remove damaging information from Mr. Bush's military personnel files, had been a source of the report. This person did not know the exact role he played.
Burkett has employed attorney David Van Os speak on his behalf as the scandal unfolds. What the Times does not report, however, is that Messrs. Burkett and Van Os are both Democrat operatives with a long history of activism in the Democratic Party of Texas. Van Os is even a past and current Democrat Nominee for the Texas Supreme Court.
Van Os' website includes an enthusiastic endorsement from none other than Bill Burkett. Burkett, it also seems, is himself a Democrat activist whose past includes heavy participation in the 2002 Democratic Party of Texas State Convention. He previously employed Van Os' services in a failed lawsuit against several officers in the Texas National Guard, which some believe may be the motive behind his agenda against George W. Bush over the latter's guard record. While it should be noted that neither Van Os nor Burkett have been affirmatively linked to the Kerry Campaign (or at least not yet, that is), both appear to be partisan activists. If Burkett's as of yet unnamed role in the memo scandal is revealed, his close affiliations to the Democratic Party of Texas and a high ranking leader and candidate from its ranks would establish a direct link between the Rathergate scandal and Kerry's party.
Van Os has provided no details to date of Burkett's role, however he did repeat Dan Rather's previous Non Sequitur to the Times: “the real story is and should be, where was George Bush?” Neither Van Os, nor Burkett, nor Rather have explained why we should believe that an allegation against Bush that is directly contingent upon the forged memos should be accepted ras the “real story” even if the memos are false.

If he's fingered, his ties to Kerry are obvious.
If his gambit had succeeded, he'd be the Godfather of the Democrat Party.
Now that it's blown up in his face, and with a lame duck Republican president in office, he'll likely endure the wrath of the US Attorney in Dallas.
I think Rather is bailing as fast as he can. The wagons are on fire and he knows it. That's why he rolled in a new source and went on the air with her with little or no checking her out. Otherwise he would have know she was a pool secretary.
The other news agencies are not going to go down with Dan so they are retracting stories and digging hard now. Dan knows he is running out of time.

Yup. Those forged docs didn't go directly to SeeBS. They took the slow boat through the DNC, Kerry Campaign, and possibly other leftist nests (I'm sure Teddy even had a good squint at them).
