John Kerry Campaign Hires Fired Worker

POSTED: 9:06 am EDT September 15, 2004

DETROIT -- Democrat John Kerry has a new campaign worker helping him drum up support in Alabama after hiring a woman who was fired for displaying the presidential candidate's bumper sticker on her car.

Kerry called Lynne Gobbell on Tuesday after reading a newspaper story describing how she had been fired last Thursday from her job packing cellulose insulation at a Moulton, Ala., plant.

Gobbell said her former employer had told her she could either work for him or Kerry. She said Kerry told her, "Let him know that as of today, you're working for John Kerry." "He was proud of me for standing up for what I believe in," the newly employed, 41-year-old said of her quick phone call with the candidate.

Gobbell said Kerry didn't offer too many details about her new position. She will be helping the campaign and may be traveling a little as it gets closer to the election.

She could receive help from another corner, as well. A liberal Web site, AMERICAblog.org, began raising money for Gobbell on Monday night after learning of her dismissal. John Aravosis, who runs the site, said he collected $1,800 over a 24-hour period.

Well we ain't lawyers so arguing is useless. Expecting honest hard work from your employees, paying them for it and f***ing with thier politics are way different things.

"Well we ain't lawyers so arguing is useless."

I really don't need to consult a lawyer to understand my rights as a property owner...and that doesn't include allowing ANYONE to put political advertising on my property that I don't approve of.

I didn't believe the story when I first read it, and I still don't believe it.

I don't believe an employer would say ". . .decide between working for Kerry or for me." No, it doesn't pass the smell test.

Another fabricated "news" story, to promote the liberal agenda. Portrays Kerry supporters as being victims of oppression by the conservative right.

How did she get fired. From the above statement kerry told her to tell her employer that she would work for him (kerry). I may be wrong but did her previous employer actually fire her or is this another "kerry story"

Besides if I was a lawyer, I'd probably tell you that if your parking lot is accessible to the public then it is a more public place than, say, your back yard at your house.

I talked to the cops once about people diving in my dumpster on my work property and they said it was perfectly legal. Of course, it's California.

BS'ing on the phone and cruising the net all day?

Let's load up the Kerry campaign with more of these folks.

He doesn't have enough people looting his campaign yet.

If she's parking in his parking lot I guess he has every right to not want he political advertising on his property...and she has every right to find another job.

It is a bit of a gray area as her car is in the parking lot which is company property however it is rather rare for an employer to do this. The sticker would usually have to be an egregious violation, something that would reflect badly on the company as a whole.

There is ample support for saying that you may not wear political clothing at work but a bumper sticker? I would say that there is a lot more to the story then is being told.

Her comment, "You can't tell me who to vote for!" is very odd. How does that leap happen?

I don't believe for a minute that that is why she was fired. I'd be willing to bet she wasn't doing her job and/or creating problems and this is just some BS excuse. Her former employer can't really be specific with the media as to why she was fired or he could be sued. Why are so many on this post so eager to believe this woman when she is a lock-step member of the proven liar party?

"The sticker would usually have to be an egregious violation, something that would reflect badly on the company as a whole."

I'm a Vietnam Vet. To me a Kerry sticker, displayed on my property where the public can see it is egregious.

I'll give you a for instance. One of my son's used to have a Seattle Mariner's bumper sticker on his car. I asked him to remove it or not park in our drive way.

Why? Because the Seattle Mariners is the only major league baseball team who refuses to fly an American flag anywhere on the outside of the building or where it can be observed on the outside of the building. They had one displayed for two days then removed it because of public complaints (this is Seattle).

If the Mariner's cannot display out flag I will not allow anything supporting them to be displayed on my property. When I explained to this my son he removed the sticker and he and his wife sold their season tickets (he did send a letter to the Mariner's management first and was blown of).

My property...it's pretty simply.
