Controversial Filmmaker Michael Moore Coming to Provo (Utah)
KSL ^ | 14 September, 2004 | KSL

Controversial filmmaker and anti-Iraq war activist Michael Moore is coming to Utah.

Moore will speak at Utah Valley State College on October 20th -- just before the presidential election.

"TO GET HIM TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE ELECTION TO COME TO UTAH TO OUR COLLEGE, I THINK IS A BIG DEAL AND IT'S REALLY EXCITING FOR US."

But some students are not as excited to see the filmmaker --- who is best known for the documentary Fahrenheit 9-11 -- which heavily criticizes the Bush administration.

Jordan Gunderson, UVSC Student: "HE DOESN'T REPRESENT THE VALUES THAT WE HAVE HERE ON CAMPUS, SO I DON'T KNOW WHY WE SHOULD PAY FOR SOMEONE'S AGENDA TO COME, WHEN HE SHOULD PROBABLY COME FOR FREE."

Moore will speak at noon on the 20th.

Students will be able to hear him free -- but others will have to pay.

Saw you post on the State board. I think they're full of hot air. Which Repub are they going to invite? The just spent their ENTIRE budget on Moore.

For $50K, I'd go to Berkeley!

I'm far away too. That's why I'd like to see if we could have someone in the area do the organization. As stated before, we really just need:

1. A spot to meet before going to the protest area. (easy)
2. A decision on signs. Do we want the anti-Moore signs (ex: Communist Party Welcome MM) or do we want to turn the thing into a Patriot and/or Pro-Bush rally (I favor the latter)? (easy as everyone will bring their own signs/flags)
3. Put up a post and gather a ping list to remind everyone to attend and the details a day or two before the event (I will be happy to do this one, if the information is provided to me).

Finally, I will try to get in touch with some of the college Republican clubs at BYU, UVSC, UofU, USU, WSU, and SLCC to find out if they are planning on going down. If I manage to contact them, I'll post on this thread and ping/freep mail whoever wants to do the final prep work.

I agree that we should keep it positive, but I don't see why we can't throw in a few anti-communism stabs too. I'll definately be carrying the flag! Maybe I'll bring handfuls of small ones to hand out.

Sounds good, I would like it dominated with a positive message and sprinkled with the anti-commie/moore stuff too. Gotta go, I'll post tomorrow (after I contact some of the college repub organizations).

How about rallying the conservative UVSC students (the Institute building might be a good place to start), have them pack the place early, then have them turn their backs on him in silent protest.

I can print and will donate 250 11x17 full color posters if someone can design and send it to me as a pdf file, already composed. We have the big Xerox Docucolor 12 that (Kinko's ?) uses for their high end color.

Someone needs to tell Mr. Moore that $50,000 is not free speech!

Swapping back and forth between the two threads! Sean Hannity is very welcome, as is Michael Reagan, but who I'd love to see is Laura Ingraham. After watching her make mulch of O'Reilly the other night, well.....

Plus, my husband, single-handedly, would raise enough money to pay any of her fees :-)

Think of the contrast! Imagine the average male college student. It's a thing of beauty to the mind!

My neighbor who is a career military guy had the idea of carrying signs that say something like "The Utah Communist Party welcomes Michael Moore" and hope the news shows the sign.

The hardest part would be convincing everybody else protesting that you are actually a conservative linking Moore with Communists.

Does that count as a positive sign?

See post 45 and 46. I have contacted the Chair of the UVSC College Republicans. We could coordinate with him so that you're friend wouldn't get weird looks (also if he met and came with the freepers, there would be no problem).

If you live in the Provo/Orem area (or know someone who does), freep mail me (the UVSC chair would like a Freeper to attend their meeting on Tuesday)...

My dad taught at UVSC for several years. I was talking to my mom this evening and he got on the phone, very incensed that they are hosting Moore. He is not a political guy either.

What if they gave a speech and no one came? how about taking the opposite tack of persuading students NOT to attend the speech. Don't protest, ignore Moore. I'm probably naive, but Moore laps up this kind of publicity. And if he spoke to an arena that was 1/3 full, that's a good statement too.

Just indifference. Or is it too late for that?
