Anyone have a tried and true way of killing fire ants? I bought some white, nasty powder from Ortho and all it did was make the ants move their mound. After 5 attempts, I poured boiling water on them. Killed them all, along with a patch of my grass. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

I thought the groundhog living under my shed was cute. Then I moved a board in the shed and found a giant hole in the floor.

The groundhog created holes under my shed, then the carpenter ants moved in and ate a whole section of the floor and the 2x4s holding them up.

Now, I have to catch the stupid groundhog, rip up the floor and replace it, and poison the carpenter ants.

Nature sucks ass.

There is some type of a granular chemical...I used it years ago on an anthill in my yard......the little buggers carry the granuals back to the nest and other ants eat it....it eliminates the entire ant colony that way.....but it wasn't powder, it was grains....Diazinon(sp?) maybe???

If you or someone you know smokes, save several hundred cigarette butts and mix them with 1 gallon of water.

Allow this to sit for several days and then pour this nasty stuff (without butts)directly into the hole(s). No kidding, this works.

Nicotine is still used as an insecticide but is quite dangerous to handle in pure form.

Call John Kerry. Tell him you have suffered a natural disaster. Being on the road, he will send Al Gore to address a crowd on your property. Al will stand on the mound, all the ants will crawl up his pants, and he will expell a fire-blazing speech blaming Bush for the problem.
Then he'll go away to sulk.

Kinda involved, and not sure it works totally, but you can make some money off it. When I lived in Austin many years ago, someone was going around, melting lead and pouring it into the holes. He would then carefully dig it up and sell it as art. Might not get rid of the mound, but it sure would make me feel good pouring it down the hole.

When I was in Texas we tried lots of stuff, but the bottom line is that the ants will always migrate into your yard from next door.

I found that the best thing was simply to kill the mounds as they appeared. Here's what I did. As I mowed the lawn, I would mark each mound as I saw it. Afterwards, I would put diazanon granules (or other ant killer) on the mounds, and wash the poison into the mound with a gentle hose.

Our yard was pretty ant-free....

Gas in the hole. That's what I use for yellow jackets. You don't have to light it. It permeates the nest. I usually pour playsand in after it. Moth Crystals work dandy to plug the hole.
