I haven't seen anyone else, here or on any blogs mention this. I figured it out myself, but I don't have a blog, so here it is.
As most people know, one of the single most damning criticisms of the memos is the perfectly centered address headers of the May 4, 1972 and August 1, 1972 memos.
Liberals have attempted to rebut this with the highly improbable possibility that this centered address was a -letterhead- that someone had gone through tremendous trouble to do and then duplicate. Highly improbable, but certainly not impossible, so they feel this point has been "debunked".
Well, consider that theory COMPLETELY debunked.
USA Today has a PDF on their website containing the original 4 memos AND 2 new memos, supposedly by Killian. USA Today has confirmed that they got their copies of the memos independently of CBS. This is supported by the fact that their versions do not have Bush's Longmont address redacted the way CBS's versions do.
The PDF is linked to below.
Look at Page 5.
The centered address in this new, June 24 1973 memo that CBS did not release, has two striking differences versus the centered addresses on the other memos. For one, in this one, the "th" -is- superscripted. More importantly, THE ENTIRE "HOUSTON, TX 77034" line is MISSING!
And if you type it into Word, YUP, these two address lines are PERFECTLY centered. The second line begins and ends at the exact same place in the forgery as it does in Word after centering.
So what's the liberal's answer to this going to be? That someone went through the meticulous effort to design a letterhead for this letter - AND FORGOT TO PUT IN THE CITY, STATE AND ZIP?!?!

This thought may have already been covered. If so, mea culpa. Has anyone tracked down the PO Box 34567 and the name associated with it in 1972?
Huh?
Yeah, improbable as it seems, the P.O. Box 34567 bit checked out. It really -does- sound like something an idiot would use for the combination on their luggage, doesn't it...?

Great minds think alike!

What galls me beyond the rest of the garbage in all of this is the libs say even if the memos are frauds, you still need to answer the charges in them. If the memos are frauds, and this is agreed to by everyone on the planet except Dan, then their content needs no scrutiny whatsoever . So you stupid libs. If you've got phoney evidence, then you've got phoney charges. For example, rice in the butt is phoney evidence of a combat wound deserving a purple heart. If you do receive a purple heart legitmately then you don't toss it or attempt to make it appear that you tossed it. Your guy is a loser, liar, fraud and traitor. Just admit this and stay home on election day. EDay by the way is on Tues the 9th for libs I think.
The perfectly centered address of three lines of different lengths all are centered with each other. And the one that misses a line, has two lines instead of three, proves that these memos didn't have preprinted addresses already on them.
All of these addresses which we can now safely say weren't pre-printed, are in the same position relative to the text of the rest of the memo.
Is that what you meant?
Good man! :)
I think it's a big deal because I've read liberals use the "it was perfectly centered because it was letterhead" claim several times now. There really is NO other explanation for it, and that makes this single issue the true "smoking gun". The rest of the evidence is just icing (granted, a HELL of a lot of icing).
Being somewhat masochistic, I actually waste my time arguing with them over on the Charlie Rose board - and that's what they tried. When I told one lib what was at the USA today site, and how it utterly destroyed his defense - the kool aider in question refused to go to it, claiming that it must be virus infected, LOL.
Qwinn
Yes, but not just that.
The two-line address on the June 24th memo itself is perfectly centered. Fire up word, type the lines as they appear, and center them. It's exact. I have no doubt that an overlay will show it perfect.
I don't think even a liberal would try to claim that -that- was "letterhead". Most people don't reproduce letterhead and leave out the city, state and zip.
This is especially true when you consider that the superscripted "th" in the new version changes the length of the first line... which causes the 2nd line to adjust slightly. They don't center at the very same spot they do on the other memos - but they DO center exactly the way Word will in each case. Case closed.

I think they're the same. In the CBS version, it's cut off by margins on the right and on the bottom.
Meenie, if Lt. Bush,(President Bush) asked for an exemption and it was granted, then the missed days can be made up later. I was in the ANG and that is how things operated. I was a police officer and certain days my schedule would conflict. I asked for later make-up days which were granted. Exemptions can be obtained even during war-time. President Bush has been honest and forth-right concerning his ANG time and military records. Kerry is hiding his, by refusing to sign the "180 form." The question is, who do you trust to safeguard our country against all enemies both foreign and domestic? It's a clear choice and please remember lies, deceptions and forged douments are the ways of the communist in America. This message was approved by the,"Brotherhood of American Patriots." For a Free America, vote Bush/Cheney 2004 (P.S.) President Bush, doesn't know how to tap dance, (only flip-flop kerry diddly-bop) can dance to that tune.)
Well, I decided to send this to Jim Geraghty at the Kerry Spot at NRO first, cause I like his blog.
If he doesn't post it within a couple of hours, I'm sending it to the Powerline blog guys.
I would send it to Instapundit, but the last three or four times I've emailed him with stuff I felt was good he's never responded. The last time I asked him to just confirm for me that I had his address right, and he didn't even bother responding to that - so his loss.
I really do believe this is a smoking gun. There can be no rational explanation for this twip-level centering, given the 2nd example of it in this new June 24th memo. All the rest of the evidence of forgery is just icing.

But liberals play dumb and settle for feasibility. Had all the memos had the same 3 address lines they would say it was a crude stationery that Killian typed once and made copies for his personal use.
Right, but now they can't. There's no way to incorporate that new memo and still claim feasibility. Which is why I think this is an inarguable smoking gun.

The ONLY interesting thing about the story is what is says about Dan Rather, CBS, the few media outlets that are still backing them, and the mealymouthed others that still put "alleged" in front of the word "forgeries" in their reports.
You're absolutely right. I forgot about the typewriter bell. There would have been broken, hyphenated words if the documents were typed on a typewriter.
34567 checked out as being in existence in the 1990s. I have not seen anything to indicate that it was used in the early 1970s (I haven't seen anything to indicate that it was not) or, more specifically, that it was associated with President Bush in any way.
My understanding is that that P.O. Box was found on other documentation regarding Bush's service that has been authenticated.
Qwinn
Yes, I did see it on a copy of a letter written by President Bush (maybe it was the one asking for a transfer; I don't remember). The P.O. Box was Killian's address.
Please be sure to get this to Brit Hume at Fox News, if I understand it correctly, this could be the proof that these are in fact forgeries.
