The CBS expert had to have been scared - if he was considered as being on record authenticating an obvious forgery, he'd find it difficult to find any future work as an expert.

I'm guessing that his future as a document expert has been seriesly impaired already. Deservedly so, IMO.

"In fact, modern copiers and computer printers are so good that they permit easy fabrication of quality forgeries. From a copy, the document examiner cannot authenticate the unseen original but may well be able to determine that the unseen original is false. Further, a definite finding of authenticity for a signature is not possible from a photocopy, while a definite finding of falsity is possible." -- Marcel Matley, "The Practical Litigator", Sept. 27, 2002

If this guy is talkin' again, then the blogosphere needs to chat him up...

(1) What did CBS ask him specifically to comment on for the camera? Handwriting analysis, document forensics, or both?;

(2) Who else did CBS mentioned in connection with their receiving these documents or their chain of custody (a question any authoritative handwriting analyst surely asked)?; and

(3) Remind Matley what he wrote two years ago about "quality forgeries" and ask him for the probability that these documents were created on a "modern computer printer".

The MSM is getting provoked, both Newsweek and the Washington Post are saying enough is a enough. But who can blame a pathetic 72 year old anchor for trying to hold on to the spotlight. His only hobby is walking around saying looking at me, I'm powerful, but without the anchor desk, he's got claim on nothing, he has to stand on his own merits which look to be non-existent.

I have said it before and I'll say it again. I believe it to be very possible that his daughter is somehow involved and he is protecting her.

I think you are right, there, Pete.

"I will conjecture DNCBS will stonewall for @ least 8 more weeks..."

That would be sweet! We get to fire broadsides at the soft underbelly of the mainstream media for every day that Dan Rather remains employed at CBS.

He's the journalist who has broadcast forged memos in an attempt to smear the President of the United States of America. He's got no "originals" of those forged memos. He can't say who was his source. He can't authenticate them, and he can't produce experts who can refute the clear indications of forgery in those docs, either.

So as long as Dan Rather remains employed at CBS, we get to point out that CBS is in violation of its public service requirement for its free public airwaves national broadcast license, that the network is willfully employing a known fraudster, that the network is protecting a proven forger, and that *nothing* else that CBS says can be believed.

Why would we on the Right want this scandal to be ended prematurely by CBS figuring out that they've got to get rid of Dan Rather?!

This is a thing of great beauty! The longer that CBS goes without making the tough decision to send Dan Rather out of the building, the longer we get free shots at the mainstream media's credibility.

I could revel in this scandal alone for months, possibly even years.

...And here's the real kicker: Kerry is going to lose no matter how many mainstream journalists fall on their swords (for him). So Dan's inevitable career crash won't even win them anything. It's not even worthy of journalistic martyrdom. It's just a work accident in the Palestinian way of journalistic suicide bombings.

I think this is the definitive article by the MSM debunking the documents. You can't get much more authoritative than this.

Here's a way to put another nail in Rather's coffin. Apparently one of the CBS documents appeared to have a legitimate signature. It would be of interest to know if this signature was photocopied from a copy of another legitimate document. If this was done, and if that other document just happens to be in the public domain from any of Killian's records, it should be possible to compare copies of signatures between the apparent legitimate Rather document and those others available. It would be like searching for a needle in a haystack, but people don't sign their name exactly the same way every time, meaning that there will be some differences between them. If a document can be found for which the signatures overlay exactly, it would be a final proof that Rather's documents have been forged by photocopying the legitimate signature onto the illegitimate document. And that would identify the document that was used from which to make the copy.

Anyone out there with time on their hands?

The only reason the Washington Post has definitively entered the fray is because the weight has turned against the original premise and made the story a liability Rather than an asset in the election of John Kerry. In any case exposing the deceit is good.

I hope that the thousands of militant bloggers and internet activists don't stop now when the Holy Grail is to expose where the documents came from.

We somehow have to make a big enough noise to get this all on PAGE 1..I was at a function tonight where the majority of folks were on our side or moderates . None had heard much at all yet concerning the frauds . Ok the internet and talk radio are doing a fine job exposing Rather and CBS but it seems that the average around my parts still havsent heard the full story here..by the way , I'm new to this site (joined up friday ) I haven't gotten to half my work since and been keeping ungodly hours reading post here.EXCELLENT WORK GUYS !!!!!!!!!!!

It's fun to observe that instead of reporting the news, Dan Rather is the news. (Note the meaning of "is").

And it will be HARD not to gloat!!!

There is a time for gloating...and I think you nailed it. Election night will be payback for innumerable offenses and obscenities by the jackboot left.

I for one intend to take full opportunity to enjoy it to the hilt. I want to see Carvile with another wastebasket on his head. I want to see Lettuce Roll Jennings scowl anti-American obscenities at the angry white males for having another temper tantrum. And I want to see Rather open a vein on national TV as his boy goes down in flames he fuelled.
I don't care about seeing Brokaw at all because he's too pompous to be interesting even when he's melting down.

But mostly I want to see McAuliffe explain it all away and tell us how the 'craps really won after all.

He didn't know what he was getting himself into. He thought it was easy money-- tell See BS what they wanted to hear (they're real), get paid and go home. Since he was anonymous when the report first aired, he didn't think it would ever come back to bite his ass.

This is the same guy who authenticated the magically appearing Vince Foster suicide note. That about says it all doesn't it?
