MSM; Rather 1, Bloggers 0

Posted on 09/13/2004 2:40:35 PM PDT by geneboy

In case it's has escaped your attention, Dan Rather and the MSM, at least based on my review of it, has marched on. The forged documents have become yesterday's news.

What sould have been a defining moment in this year's presidential election is being ignored by the MSM, and by default, the general population.

We know, beyond a reasonable doubt, that CBS news used forged documents in its politically driven attempt to discredit President Bush's Air National Guard service. And we know that, to their credit, bloggers not only identified those documents as forgeries, but exposed them as forgeries. Initially it seemed as the the MSM would sieze upon this as a story. But, as of today, 13SEP94, the story has all but dissappeared from the mainstream media.

Dan Rather, after having given a pathetic defence of the documents, marches on, while the bloggers continue to preach to the choir.

The forged documents represented an opportunity to attack the MSM, DNC and Kerry/Edwards ticket on a number of levels. Specifically, their general incompetence and fundemental dishonesty. How can you trust the Kerry/Edwards ticket to succeed in the War on Terror when they can't even orchestrate the distribution of forged documents that fail to eclispe the abilities of most 7th graders. And how can we trust you someone who sinks to such desperate and dishonest measures in an effort to save a philosophically failed campaign.

Yet, the issues surrounding the memos have gone largely unreported. Why? Because the few media outlets conservatives have dropped the ball on this one.

Matt Drudge has decided to focus his attentions on Ivan. Hey Matt, I can get all the weather information I need from my second rate, network affiliate weatherman. Why don't you play to your strengths, emphasize politically charged charged stories that the MSM avoid.

And then there is Fox News, grade F. As a network news organization you never, EVER, miss an opportunity to increase your ratings at the expense of your competitiors. Fox should have put together an hour special on CBS's report for broadcast of Sunday night. For god's sake, the bloggers had done 90% of your research for you. And, you should have advertised it during the Sunday football games. Instead, Fox News seemed to content itself having dimwits like Shepard Smith, et al, repeat the AP wire story that, "CBS stands behind its sources."

So, my friends, Dan Rather will continue espouse his view of the world despite all your efforts.

Well, I gotta go. I have a BioChem exam this afternoon. And BioChem is a lot harder than politics.

Regards, and keep up the struggle.

Geneboy

I agree. All I see is an analysis of the whole Memogate thing. Aside from the vanity, it was hardly a troll. But what do I know?

Actually there's a much more legitimate reason for the media to drop this (notice even Fox has pretty much walked way):
Nothing new is happening.

In order to keep talking about a story the media needs new things to say, which means they need new events to discuss. A story like this always has a short shelflife, CBS is denying it's a fraud, everybody else has put forth their reasoning for thinking it's a fraud, that's it. The story is done, unless somebody gets really bold and sues there won't be any new events, meaning there won't be anything new to discuss, meaning there won't be anything new to say, meaning it won't get anymore coverage.

All things considered, given their immense bias both politically and professionally, I'm pleasantly suprised buy how much coverage this got and how much of the media was almost honest in their coverage. The still suck and I hate them, but they didn't suck as much as usual Thursday and Friday.

Fox News is still on this. They showed what Matley wrote in his book about verifying signitures from photo copies. They also had a retired NG Officer on discrediting the Dan docs.

I don't think this is worthy of a ZOT.

The poster's general point is that the story is losing legs. While I'm always suspicious of newbie vanity posts, there are some valid points here.

Moderator - I am requesting that you reconsider restoring the original title to this vanity.

I'm not gonna put it on the line for him, usually quick zots (and this was quick) are the result of IP tracing more than content. But I am a firm believer in the broken clock theory so even if he is a repeater troll he is, at least partially in this one case, right. The story is over, it'll wind down through the columnists and we won't be hearing anything about it come the end of the week, sure was fun.

Listening to handwriting expert saying the signatures are not consistent with known signatures of Killian....also noting the appearance of documents match computer generated, she reproduced exactly on computer...."very probably" not produced by Killian....sounds like legal speak in court where you can't say "match" but can say "characteristics are similar to"...Interview by Brit for Fox.

Up until now I haven't heard anybody question the signature, so that would be something new to discuss (more sad proof of what an amatuer job these forgeries are, scanning and inserting a signature onto a document is child's play, the modenr age of computers means no one ever need forge a signature again). Brit's good, he might keep this alive through Wednsday, but without a major development (recanting by CBS, civil suit) it's winding down and soon to be a dead issue.

It's the natural news cycle, happens all the time. News programs have very short memories.
