For some Republicans it is the perfect political storm: a Senate vote on a constitutional amendment to protect the U.S. flag that would put Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry, running mate John Edwards and Minority Leader Thomas A. Daschle on the spot just a few weeks before the Nov. 2 elections.

I cannot conjur up a government action that deserves a flag-burning in protest more than the attempt to outlaw the burning of flags!
Proper disposal of worn-out flags:
Before a flag can be burned, it must first be cut into separate pieces. The field of blue must first be cut from the stripes. Then, the stripes must be cut into strips.
To properly burn the flag. During the ceremony, the stripes are burned first, and then the field of blue. The ashes are buried.
Burning the flag is right up their with Blasphemy to me, and anyone caught doing it should be charged with treason and thrown in prison for the rest of their stinking lives!!!
Ahem. Aren't you supposed to be resting peacefully under a memorial somewhere? May I ask which of the founding fathers you are? By the way, I've been raising bloody hell over the AWB, and I think with a few thousand other FReepers we've had some success in restoring our 2nd amendment rights to some degree -- without firing a shot. I hope you approve! I think you're needed over on a thread about religion in government, though. It's been nice talking with you, and I'm happy to see that you're still keeping an eye on us.
The major problem with such a law is that laws consistently function on verifiable quantification in most every respect. Thus, if a U.S. flag is defined as having the dimentions of 3 feet by 5 feet, then the cranks will just make a 2.5 foot by 4.5 foot flag and burn that.
What's more, burning the flag is an acceptable means of retiring a flag. Such practices are done with reverence and sincerity. The punks burn the flag in anger. So, in effect, we are not outlawing an action; we are outlawing an attitude.
That's pretty damned dangerous territory to tread. The Leftists have been doing as much with their idiotic "hate speech" crap. I'm not so sure we should venture into that domain...
That's the beauty of the first amendment. You don't get to decide for someone else whether or not what he's expressing is acceptable.
True. So when can we look forward to the revocation of all those idiotic "hate speech" laws?
Oh...right...never.
Let's get to it.
That said, I will risk jail to beat the hell out of any who tries to burn one around me, and take my chances with a Texas jury.
Does this apply to all who burn their flag when retiring it (as is commonly accepted by all veterans' and military groups)?
Some group should start a public show where every month or so they draw 1 foreign flag at random and a UN flag and burn them. Kerry et al would be flooding D.C. with anti-burning bills. The UN would crap all over itself. Be a hoot.
You burn MY flag (that I've earned the right to have over me when I'm buried) at your own hazourd in my presence. I will become very violent in expressing my first ammendment rights.
BTTT
Isn't it wonderful that we, the American peeples, are paying this guy what, 140K-150K plus how many hundreds of thousands of dollars in perks to be a Senator and he never shows up to do his job??
I really like the way you think!
