On September 10, 2004, Dan Rather declared war on the internet. He shouldn't have because it's a battle he is destined to lose. Addressing only a small part of the hundreds of criticisms that web-based critics and assorted typewriter, font, and military experts have lodged against his report, Rather and his CBS colleagues seem to have a masochistic desire for punishment. Our latest updates on the Memogate controversy are posted below. For our 21-point rebuttal to Rather's Sept. 10 salvo, click here.
The unraveling continues. Two of the three people cited on-camera by CBS News as vouching for its conclusion that Jerry Killian--the former Air National Guard commanding officer of George W. Bush--authored incriminating memoranda about the future president have, in subsequent interviews with other media organizations, tempered their support for CBS.
Robert Strong, who served with Killian as an officer tells the New York Times that he does not believe that his former associate used a proportional font typewriter during his time in the Texas guard.
"Mr. Strong said in an interview Friday he was quite sure that he and others used Selectrics in the adjutant general's office. He added that he was not sure the typewriters and devices were also in the 147th Combat Support Squadron at the Ellington base in Houston, home of the 111th squadron.
"'I'm skeptical that Killian was working on that,' Mr. Strong said."
Strong's comments come on the heels of a statement from Marcel Matley, a writing analyst whom CBS presented as having certified its four documents. Interviewed by the Los Angeles Times, however, Matley said that he only vouched for one to the network.
The forger was not necessarily trying to hide the superscript, he or she may have belatedly realized that 111 needed a th after it (when you have already typed past the area, it seems WORD doesn't automatically superscript the th for you).
Perhaps the forger was just someone who shared the same dismal competence as the CBS "journalists".

We saw a microcosm of this fiasco in Cali with the recall. The last months before the election, the Cali MSM (LAT etc) was spinning like a dervish for Gray Davis, and coming out with a smear a day against Arnold. Strippers, "sex harrassment", gropegate etc. Every week they had another fake "push poll" declaring Davis to be in the lead. It was surreal, just like the MSM in this new Presidential fight.
But the Cali MSM had "jumped the shark," and was so totally discredited (on talk radio, the internet etc) that the more they spun for Davis, the more it added to Arnonld's actual popularity.
This is what CBS is doing today. Rather is so discredited, that the more he tries to hurt Bush, the more he helps him.
Another great analogy I've seen today: suppose you are watching "genuine WW2 news reel footage" and a Boing 747 is seen flying past.
Imagine the forger / faker of the film saying, "But a plane exactly like a 747 COULD have been built in 1945! There were jet engines and aluminum fuselages in 1945! How dare you say my film was faked! That 747 could have been secretly created in 1945, and you can't prove otherwise!"
That is the position Dan Rather is arguing today.
I do like CSI, and their sports coverage is ok. 60 Minutes and CBS News are distant memories.
Always glad to welcome another new freeper! Wonder how much the membership will increase after all the publicity for our famous freepers!!
Welcome aboard!!
You are right......we are the "original" band of brothers ( and sisters) here at The Free Republic!!
Enjoy!!
That's probably where the forger got the address for the MS Word document.
The IBM Composer, the expert reports, cost in the neighborhood of $4,000-$5,000 in 1972-73 dollars, the equivalent of some $20,000+ dollard today.
Maybe we should have CBS poll the terrorist to find out.

How else do you think 'J 57 Kerry' is polling so close to Bush all the time ????????????????
Also, this pretty much makes it 3 out of 3 CBS "experts" backing out which pretty much leaves Danny Boy twisting in the wind.
Also, a little side benefit--the handwriting "expert" who is now backing off is the same shill who verified Vince Foster's "suicide" note. Somehow I wouldn't think the Clintons would want the Rosetta Stone for the VRWC's investigation of the Clinton Crime Family to re-emerge.

Travis, that is an excellent summary of what happened out in California this past year with the maggots of the perverted MSM. Their lies and spins about Arnold backfired big time with the moderates, independents and the young 20-30 something voters both male and female.
Thank you!
Thanks to Phildragoo for finding for us.
I sent it out in my emails yesterday. We went to a birthday party for a friend. A person who isn't on my email list came up and asked if I sent that link out. This guy would be a true independent. I said yes. He was sent my email by a person that is on my list.
He said that he was leaning away from Kerry, and that email convinced him to vote for GW this November. Then he and his wife and I had a great discussion about "Unfit for Command!". He is not a vet, but his older brother served in Nam and was spit on when he returned to the Bay Area. He will be ordering the book. His wife is adm asst. for a local CEO and uses MS Word. When she saw that link unfold, she was outraged. She too will be voting for GW.
I think we're seeing it again, nationally.
We are seeing it Nationally.
Those of us in California got a first hand look at the lies, frauds and spins by the LA Slimes, SF Gayrhonicle, the JoseJerky and the Bees.
They jumped the shark and sent voter running to vote for Arnold.
Hopefully, this will be replicated across the nation as we use the truth like holy water and as a wooden spike on the vampires of the MSM.
My understanding is that it wasn't just an IBM Selectric like a secretary would use in an office. I thought someone had said that the only machine capable of creating the proportional spacing, etc, was the IBM COMPOSER which was a much more expensive machine than the typical Selectric, and was not in common use by most folks, and almost certainly NOT by a Texas National Guard unit.
I read a thread yesterday in which Jerry Killian's son is quoted as saying that his Dad and another Guard officer were in a office that shared a secretary, and the secretary only used an old electric typewriter, NOT a fancy (for the time) IBM Selectric. I'd love it if someone could find the secretary and get the real story!
An apt analogy!
