On September 11, 2001 our nation was attacked. Like many New Yorkers Steve Golding lost a friend in the World Trace Center attack. He created a flash video that became one of the most watched videos on the internet. I was webmaster for WABC radio host Steve Malzberg at the time and contacted Steve Golding to see if we could run the video from our website. It was the most requested video that we had on the site.

It is appropriate that on this anniversary I link to it again so that we can be reminded what this anniversary is all about. Why our friends, neighbors and relatives who serve in our armed forces are sacrificing their lives. It must also serve as a reminder why we must mnake the right choice on November 2, 2004. Too many of my fellow New Yorkers have forgotten or at least they have become complacent, thinking we can negotiate with evil. We cannot.

I am linking to the video so that we can remind ourselves of that day and also so that some newbies to this site who have never seen it may have the opportunity to view it.

After the attack and during the recovery a memorial light was put in place. Two powerful spotlights facing the sky where the towers stood. The following shots were taken by me from pier 58 in Brooklyn on April 13, 2002 one day before the lights were switched off. It was also my 50th birthday.

It just occurred to me this morning: The "Peace Lovers" publicized the 1,000 lives sacrificed in this War on Terrorism. They did not carry the additional 3,000 caskets that started it.

It also occurred to me this morning that the 1,000 fallen soldiers died at the hands of the same terrorists that declared this war.

We must now honor 4,000+ victims on 9-11. We are still counting until justice is delivered...

everyday construction workers, etc... were working at the site; on their own time, until they were pulled away or were so exhausted they had to stop. These were not professional rescue people, but construction guys.

I recall how members of earthquake rescue teams from CA simply got in their cars on 9/11 and drove straight through to NY.

I DID NOT WANT TO KNOW WHERE GEORGE W. BUSH was. If I didn't know, then neither did THEY....Ditto Dick Cheney....

I recall thinking the same thing.

I can't imagine having to waiting for 10 days, not knowing. Just the few hours we waited were horrible. My husband was just crushed. We lived in NJ then and there was such a deep sense of grief there.

I heard them say today that either 40% or 60% didn't get any remains back. Either way that is a huge number. Therefore you were fortunate to get some remains. I suppose that brings some closure.

You said today is your birthday. What can I say? Best wishes that this will be a good year for you.

One more thing, if this has brought you back to church, one good thing has come of this.

ON that day, I was in Baltimore MD. My future wife and I were taking a vacation (my first in 5 years) to see Cal Ripken Jr. play for the last time. I had lived in PA for the previous 14 years and didnt appreciate him playing as much as I should have. I was at game 2131, when he broke the record. He was retiring that year and I had scrapped and saved to be able to take this trip and I just wanted to see him play one more time.

We had driven to Baltimore all night long from Columbus, OH, where I was and currently live. We got into Glen Burnie about 3 AM and checked into the hotel and immediately went to sleep. I woke up about 8:30 AM and my fiancee was coming out of the shower. It took me about 10 minutes to get moving and figure out the TV. When I got it going, I can't even remember what I was watching (probably ESPN), but I heard a gasp/surprised yell in the room next to us. I started flipping the channels when ESPN went to commercials (about 850am or so) and found NBC and it was live watching the tower burn. My fiancee came out of the showerroom after putting on some makeup and brushing her hair and I turned right as the second plane hit. The hair literally stood on end as I saw the plane come in and hit the building. My fiancee couldnt see the TV, immediately saw my reaction and got worried....when she saw the TV she figured out what was going on and grapped my hand. She said she never felt my hands so cold.

After about 30 seconds of watching the buildings burn I had a decision to make. Figuring that the ball games wouldnt be played today, I decided that it would be best to return home.

My parents were in Detroit at the time, putting my 97 yr old grandfather into a managed care home, as my grandmother had died September the 9th. My mom was on the Cell phone with me at 915....I told her I was on my way home. We ended up arriving about 10 minutes apart back in Columbus later that day.

I remember that day like none other. As I am here in Iraq as a direct result of that attack, how could I forget it. I wasnt scared, I was pissed. Everyone I didnt know was a potential threat. I couldnt trust anyone anymore. the age of innocence was over.

All those people, I kept thinking, gone just that quick. It was a lot for a 21 yr old to digest at the time.

and to this day, I still wish I could have seen Cal play one more day.....

nah...the people I work with (the soldiers) are the Great Americans. I am just a contractor doing my job....they are the ones that have to go out on patrols and convoys, have to stand gaurd and all that...

I just have to show up for work each day...
