On September 11, 2001 our nation was attacked. Like many New Yorkers Steve Golding lost a friend in the World Trace Center attack. He created a flash video that became one of the most watched videos on the internet. I was webmaster for WABC radio host Steve Malzberg at the time and contacted Steve Golding to see if we could run the video from our website. It was the most requested video that we had on the site.

It is appropriate that on this anniversary I link to it again so that we can be reminded what this anniversary is all about. Why our friends, neighbors and relatives who serve in our armed forces are sacrificing their lives. It must also serve as a reminder why we must mnake the right choice on November 2, 2004. Too many of my fellow New Yorkers have forgotten or at least they have become complacent, thinking we can negotiate with evil. We cannot.

I am linking to the video so that we can remind ourselves of that day and also so that some newbies to this site who have never seen it may have the opportunity to view it.

After the attack and during the recovery a memorial light was put in place. Two powerful spotlights facing the sky where the towers stood. The following shots were taken by me from pier 58 in Brooklyn on April 13, 2002 one day before the lights were switched off. It was also my 50th birthday.

3 years, seems like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at the same time. I almost feel guilty that I will be taking surfing lessons tomorrow instead of being glued to the tube like I was the last two anniversaries. I rebuilt my life and moved on, but I will never forget the horror show that day and the weeks that followed.

Thanks for sharing that story. My sister-in-law was stuck in one of the trains under the trade center. She said that no one really knew what had happened but they were not being allowed off the train and people began to panic. She said there were actually stratch marks on the doors from people trying to claw them open. After some time, the train began to move again and went to the next stop where they were allowed to get off. It was then they began to see what was happening.

Days, weeks, months later people were so different in NY, she said. People were patient and kind. People greeted each other on the streets. The nation supported NY and New Yorker's supported each other. The epitome of the American spirit. When tragedy strikes we gather our strength and take the steps that are necessary to triumph over it. We needed someone who was able to lead us through that time. Thank God the New Yorkers had Rudy Guiliani. Thank God America had George Bush. I hope none of us ever forgets how important that is.

Wow, that is poignant.

I can't imagine having to commemorate the attacks of 9/11 on your birthday.

I have a Yemeni friend who was overseas at the time of Nick Berg's coldblooded execution at the hands of those savages.

Even though he's a generally decent guy, he's a bit naive, if you ask me.

When one of his friends-who happened to be an agnostic-showed him footage of Berg's decapitation-he got sick to his stomach.

I tried to explain to him the genesis of Wahabism, the modern movement known as the "Muslim Brotherhood" and its chief 20th century exponent, Sayyid Qutb, why Shi'ism was persecuted in most parts of the Muslim world, the teachings of Jamal al-Din Afghani and how they were manipulated to serve the purposes of the Khomeinist movement, etc., etc., ad infinitum.

I don't know how much of it took, but I'm hoping that his newfound exploration of Islam doesn't lead him down the primrose path.

Misty, Thanks for that story as well. That must have been frightening for your sister and all the others on-board. Glad they made it out all right. There are countless other stories - but we pulled together for a period of MANY months after. I find it a shame that in this election year, people have seemed to have forgotten and can't think of anything beyond the pale from getting their candidate in power next...including forged documents. Remember the big picture...

How can anyone vote for John Kerry after watching this video?

I am not at home (am in Connecticut to participate in a bicycle race tomorrow afternoon). Needed to sit down before getting my (hopefully) eight-hours and diffuse a little anger here on FR. Since yours is the ping on the top of my ping list, you are elected to be the (un)fortunate recipient of my venting.

(See? They don't call you 'Lucky Don' for nothing :).

I will watch the video (again) upon returning home on Sunday (promise). For now, allow me to just tell you, and any others who happen to stumble across this post, that the prospect of John Kerry becoming President (which, thank God, appears to be fading somewhat) chills me to the bone tonight especially.

I ordered 'Unfit for Command' from Amazon.com a couple of days ago. It arrived yesterday, and I took it along with me on the drive up here this afternoon. My friend (who is also racing tomorrow) offered to drive, so I spent two hours of the drive reading O'Neill/Corsi's book.

It's not necessarily that there is anything earthshakingly new contained within the covers of the book – although there are a few small, personal Kerry recollections by Vietnam vets that simply add depth to my perception of his wickedness. It's just that, when one reads all of the refutations of his claims of heroism, countered by truthful descriptions of his cowardly, traitorous, self-serving actions … in concentrated form … it's hard to keep one's head from exploding.

Here's an example of one of the countless 'personal Kerry recollections' that struck me particularly strongly (written by John O'Neill himself, describing a couple of minutes' worth of the Swift Boat Veterans Reunion in the summer of 2003):

Kerry made a cameo appearance accompanied by a film crew and a corps of directors and assistants at an earlier outside event. Pushing aside various Swiftees, Kerry positioned himself dockside so that he could be filmed on the restored PCF that was the centerpiece of the reunion. As was his habit, Kerry ignored many of his fellow Swiftees. He placed himself front and center for the camera shot, pushing aside Swiftees like Jack Chenoweth, an officer and one of the true heroes of the Rassmann incident … which Kerry later lied about in a $50 million ad campaign.

One of Kerry's political aides singled out some Swiftees to participate in his video. Most declined. After filming the cameo and allowing one or two snapshots to be taken dockside, Kerry and his entourage disappeared, not bothering to attend a memorial service for the Swiftees who had died in Vietnam. To many, Kerry's conduct at the 2003 reunion seemed exactly in character. Kerry's service in Vietnam had been devoted largely to his own self-interest at the cost of comradeship, honor, and tradition. So his staging a self-promotion video while ignoring a memorial service for dead comrades was not surprising.

I used to despise Bill Clinton, considering him to be the most traitorous, self-absorbed, power-hungry, immoral, deceitful (I could go on, but it's late) man who ever occupied the White House. Bill Clinton doesn’t hold a candle to John Kerry in possession of those malevolent credentials.

Much more I could say about what I gleaned from this book (and intend to here on the forum when I return home), but no time now.

One last disjointed parting thought …

To those who believe that the Sixty Minutes story is going to be the ruination of Dan Rather et al, and that it will knock the mainstream media down a peg (or fifty), I say, don't count on it.

I do believe the obvious connections between the Kerry forces/the DNC (no matter how much they protest) and the fabricated 'proof' of Bush's supposed disingenuousness and unwillingness to serve in the military will put a definite damper on Kerry's campaign. As ignorant and apathetic as the populace is, they’re going to take at least momentary note of this. But CBS and the mainstream propaganda machine will survive intact at the end of the tunnel, as may the actual perpetrators of this fraud. (All we need do is ask ourselves whatever happened to the Sandy-Berger-pilfering-terrorism-documents-from-the-National-Archives fiasco-in-the-making? Answer: the media decided to downplay his criminal activity, and the no-doubt continuing spider-like connection with the Clinton coterie … and the public has already pretty much forgotten that a major crime was even committed.)

Count on the same thing happening here. The media (CBS included) will see to it that this 'relative misdemeanor' finds itself buried under all manner of fabricated or exaggerated 'news' stories – most of them unflattering to the current administration, and magnifying 'poverty' in America and any perceived 'setbacks' in Iraq -- that will of necessity take precedence, at least for the next seven and a half weeks. Yes, they will still have the audacity to play their sleight-of-hand propaganda tricks. And no, most of the voting public won’t really care. (After all, there are a couple of new 'reality TV' shows debuting this month … )

There's little I would like more than to see Dan Rather – and some of the rest of his ilk – get their just desserts. But I believe that those who are already writing his/their journalistic obituary are being very premature.

I'd really love to be wrong on this one. I'd be smiling all the way to the hat-eating ceremony.
