Here it is folks, it will do proportional type, variable line spacing, funky little superscripts and it was widely available since 1886. Of course it has 80 keys on the keyboard and foot peddles. Here we see Killian dashing off a shopping list for his wife.
I guess we should just give up now and admit Dan was right.

That's a Linotype machine. It was still in use in 1972, but it wouldn't have produced the results we see on the memos, and it would not be used for an office memo (it produced led type for a printing press)

That thing looks like if your necktie got caught in the gears, it would tear you limb from limb.
If George Bush had the courage to go to work with one of those around he more than proved himself. :p

Can you send that to the Demoncratic Underground? It might be funny to see them bite the hook all over again.

The guy's wife said he didn't know how to type! Shouldn't that settle it?

That's a Linotype machine. Sure it is.
This is a humor post.
It probably could have produced a printing plate to match the memo pretty closely, and no, outside outside of newspapers, magazines and print shops it was not widely available.

That thing looks like if your necktie got caught in the gears, it would tear you limb from limb. Isn't that how Al Gore earned his Purple Heart?
To: John Thornton
It doesn't matter - it came with speach recognition.

Was it really necessary to label this as humor?

Oh!
A Russian lap top model!
I thought you were going to show a "Woodstock" model, like the one used to type the "Pumpkin Papers".

That thing looks like if your necktie got caught in the gears, it would tear you limb from limb. Not to mention that it used molten lead to cast type on the spot.
Oddly enough, it had no relation to a typewriter keyboard. An old girlfriends Daddy set type for the Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader, one of the first to switch to electronic type in the early 70s. He lost his job, he couldn't make the switch to a typewriter keyboard.

Was it really necessary to label this as humor? Evidently so.

I was born in 1973 and I don't remember at the time seeing that specific machine at the military base when the letter was written.

It doesn't matter - it came with speach recognition. No, that was a Beta 5 computer used on Star Trek in the episode with Gary Seven in '69. It used proportional type, but could not do superscripting.

Did 'ol lady Killian find it in the attic? No, Texas Freepers had converted it to cast 230gr round nose bullets for their 1911s in 1983.
