Friday, Sept. 10, 2004 12:59 a.m. EDT Caddell: Dan Rather May Have Cost Kerry the Election

Longtime Democratic strategist Pat Caddell said Friday that if documents aired by CBS newsman Dan Rather Wednesday night turn out to be forged as alleged by experts, the presidential race "is over."

"It would be the end of the race," Caddell told Fox News Live. "It would be the end of the race," he repeated.

"[Democratic officials are] so involved in this," the former Carter pollster worried. "They have gotten themselves so involved in this issue, [in] the last 24 hours, that somebody's going to, if they're not authentic, they're going to be blamed for it. It's incredible to me that they've gotten in this." Caddell said he wasn't trying be sensationalize the issue, explaining that instead, "I'm trying to save my party, you know, by telling the truth."

He said that forfeiting the presidential race would be the least of his party's problems if Democrats are tied to any forgery scandal.

"The race is over - and we've got bigger problems than that," he warned.

I hope that these documents can be proven to be forged

Dating a document is one of the easier tasks for a forensics lab, i would think.

at DU, when someone is scrubbed or banned, they called it being tombstoned. Their profile has a tombstone id'ing them as a disrupter who "disrupted badly" quite childish however quite fun when true blue Democrats are labeled thusly.

>>>> Kerry was losing pretty good on his own.

No kidding. Months ago, I thought he actually may stand a chance to weaken the President if he were to scream "Where's Osama" at every opportunity. Then he goes and turns the whole campaign into a battle over who did what in a war that ended 30 years ago. What a maroon!!

THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE DNC, HITLERY, OR KLINTOONY HIMSELF ORCHESTRATED THIS DISASTER, it was none other than the hand of God!!! Too many wierd coincidences...

Amen!

For months and months I've been praying every single day that God will open the voters' eyes and grant them wisdom and guidance. I'm sure many other Americans have had similar prayers. I was thinking earlier that I'm priveleged to witness the answers to my prayers unfolding before my eyes. God is playing out events in such a way to open people's eyes. The swift boat vets, the Dan Rather incident, the fantastic convention at which the GOP message got out, plus Zell's straight talk which had to get through to a lot of people.

"I'm trying to save my party, you know, by telling the truth." Now that's a Democrat idea I can agree with.

Maybe this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back of the current Democrat party. Maybe, just maybe, this could be the start of a new generation of principled Democrats who are still proud, loyal Americans, but simply have honest disagreements with us Republicans.

Maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt.

I have a little secret for you! A loyal and quite clever GOPer is a mod over at the DU and he has been "tombstoning" loyal DUmb-o-rats at a rapid rate lately! Yes indeed, over at the old DU the DUmb-o-Rats have been turning on their own, sincere DUmb-o-rats and they are being "tombstoned" at a rapid rate over trivial missteps! I love it! I hope the disenfranchised, mistreated and angry DUmb-o-rats don't feel very motivated to help their party out in November. After all, that is the whole point.

In the interest of intellectual and political honesty, I have to say that I don't like this. I've no problem with conservatives lurking on DU, I do it myself to see what they're thinking. However, a conservative insinuating himself as a mod on a liberal board is flat out dishonest. I don't like. Imagine the outrage at FR if we found out that some lib had somehow become a mod here and had banned accounts (I assume that's what tombstoning means). Free speech means BOTH sides should have a place to spout off unmolested.

Pat Caddell was not on Kerry's boat. I don't think he has any right to say anything.

The title to this article annoys me, and the concept must be changed. No one is costing kerry the election. No one except, perhaps, the incumbent. George W Bush is winning the election. His stategery has been outstanding and deeper than the superficial tactics of the left. I'm proud of the man!

The documents ARE forged BUT CBS & Rather are going to dig in; claim the docs are authentic; refuse to turn them over to an independent third party; refuse to name the sources of the documents. In essence their reaction will seal their fate.

There's one interesting twist here. These are documents supposedly signed by a military officer. I believe it's a felony to impersonate an officer of the US Armed Forces. This isn't just dirty tricks, this is criminal activity. I could be wrong, but I don't think CBS can claim that the name of their source is privileged information in a criminal suit. Can any FReeper lawyers out there square me away on this?

Have you ever seen Pat Caddell and the actor Robert Newton in the same room. All Pat needs is a parrot on his shoulder.

I suppose they could keep asking questions, but if they keep getting the same answer from See BS, what then?

Then it's up to Bush (or at least the GOP) to keep this alive. Bush will probably want to keep his hands clean, but there are plenty of other avenues. For example:

1) The President and First Lady could invite widow Killian to the White House to console her and reminisce over her husband;
2) Republican senators and congressmen could make speeches (like Harkin did when the smear campaign swung into effect) denouncing dem tactics and calling for an inquiry into the forgery of the documents, blah, blah...;
3) SeeBS won't name names because they'd include people like Terry McAwful and high-level Kerry operatives. That's too juicy a story a la Watergate for any reporter or news organization to pass up. Time to Pulitzer Up!;
4) And of course there's AM radio, the web, and Fox News for background noise and research.

There are just too many unknowns for this story to dry up. It's very intriguing and has the promise of a lot of s hitting the fan. That equals eyeballs glued to tv's, newspapers and ears to radios.

Don't worry, DU is not a place where free speech is encouraged regardless.

Not sure if your comment was tongue in cheek or not, but the reason Rather is being blamed is simple. A real objective journalist would have vetted the memos to death before airing them. The fact that he ran with it immediately shows his bias. Had this been about Kerry, he would have balked, saying we don't know if this is for real etc. That is why Rather is being blamed along with the other rats.

I heard on Fox from a former CBS exec that they've been working on this story for 4 years. What's amazing is that they did not even call the widow or children before going with it. Yet, there the story is, just when it will do the most damage.

"Then what? The same thing that happened with the stolen archive documents, nothing.

Not exactly. Jesus was just sitting around his olive farm, getting the plants watered and forged documents came his way. "Hmmmm", He said, "I'm bored". Then He watched CBS news and found something wrong there too! He was bored no longer! He asked His Father, God, to let Him water some different plants. God was also bored, so He said "OK, go for it!". Jesus chased a bunch of democrats off his olive farm and they were the source of the story. He won't have gay sex taking place on his property next to a bunch of abortions. Jesus is no longer bored:):)
