Guard memos on Bush fake, says squadron leader's son

The son of President Bush's former squadron commander is disputing the authenticity of memos allegedly written by his father that are critical of Bush's service in the Texas Air National Guard.
The purported 30-year-old documents were shown Wednesday on the CBS News program 60 Minutes. The show reported that the documents came from the personal files of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, Bush's commander in the 111th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at the former Ellington Air Force Base, now Ellington Field.
Houston businessman Gary Killian said Thursday that he doesn't believe the newly discovered documents are legitimate.
Killian said his father, who died in 1984, could barely type and usually assigned typing duties to a secretary.
"It would have been against his own self-interest to keep a memo like that on file," Killian said. "It was just not in his nature to do that."
Killian said the memos appear to be faked. In one of them, he said, his father's first name is used in the signature.
"I don't recall him ever signing with his first name," the son said.
Killian said his father did not maintain an office at home and had no secret file there where such documents would have been stored.
According to the Associated Press, the White House distributed the four memos dated from 1972 and 1973 after obtaining them from CBS News. The White House did not question their accuracy.
Killian said his father "thought well" of Bush's abilities as an Air National Guard pilot assigned to fly the F-102.

I feel the DUmmies and the RATs are largely unaware of the power of the Internet and radio talk shows. Take a look at all the media's path during this "crisis". dan blather "shell shocked" that the docs were forged, some of the media still running the "Bush was AWOL" stories, etc.
The alphabet networks are wondering why Fox has overtaken them? Give me a break. Lies are their downfall. Now, they will have to tell more lies to cover the previous lies. Before long, they will forget what the original lie was, and blurt out something that no one believes.

I don't recall the IBM Selectric using Times New Roman font.
It's been awhile since I've typed on one, but I recall that you could get different balls -- a serif ball (which was more like a Courier font), a sans serif ball, and a script ball. By the 1980s you could get special balls, like one with an enlarged "speech" font. (I just realized that that's more balls than you can find at CBS.) ;)
Typewriters didn't auto-center until they came out with those with some "memory."
You are correct. I think there were only 10 pitch pica and 12 pitch elite (may be reversed). We still have some of the later IBM Selectrics here, and they do not have Times New Roman font. None had auto center or superscript. I remember re-typing many memos because the headings were not centered.

Why not just do a forensics test on these documents, and get an estimate of the age of the ink and paper?
Kerry and CBS figure some mud will stick even if proven false. As his numbers tank, he's decided to attack! I see Carville and Sasso behind this. Their fingerprints are all over it.
When I came into the AF in 1975...the best typists...worked at wing headquarters and were highly valued. If you could 40 words a minute with almost errors...you were highly sought.
How many Commanders in 1975 could type 40 words a minute? In the entire Air Force...including Guard and Reserve...less than 20...and none...repeat...none...were pilots (trust me...I worked around these guys and can attest to their true lack of admin skills). The only Commanders who could type...were English majors or did staff work at the Pentagon.
LOL There was no white-out then either.
I used a memory typewriter in the late 70's. I don't know how much earlier they were out than that. But I kind of doubt that the military had state-of-the-art office equipment.
