O.K. Fill ME IN. JUST HOW WAS DAN RATHER CAUGHT WITH PANTS DOWN?
Posted on 09/09/2004 8:54:29 PM PDT by MrChips
I am just loggining in. I understand that Rather used the documents as part of his Guard story. But why are he and CBS the culprit? Didn't the AP get the released documents originally? Where do they come in? I am confused. Please explain.

Thanks. But it still simply says "Documents unearthed by CBS News . . . . " So, where does the AP come in? I had heard that the AP sued for release of the documents.

Most of the time anchors are given editorial control. Don't know why, but traditionally the bozo reading from the teleprompter OKed the stories at some level.

Supposedly, the memos came from Killian's "personal files". However, today his son denied this. And logic precludes this, as these memos are evidence of the alleged author's unethical behavior. Who saves for posterity evidence of one's unethical behavior?
So, in answer to your question, I believe the "memos" were provided by Paul Begala and James Carville who, knowing the documents would sink the Kerry campaign, are paiving the way for a Hillary Clinton presidential run in 2008.

Oh, I see! There are two separate stories here. The AP got some documents, but not these. These just mysteriously turned up at CBS. Do I have it right?

"We could pull a bum off the street, blow-dry his hair and put him in a suit and he'd do the job just as well." Yes, but would that street bum be willing to read what he knows are damnable lies every day? It takes a certain kind of maggot willing to push an agenda to do that and still sleep nights.

CBSnews was the sole owner of these documents, they faxed them to the whitehouse the day before the story was to air and the whitehouse realeased them the second they got em...
To: MrChips
Yes!
These memos were NOT in Bush's TANG file; they were personal notes of Killian's........so CBS said; but the Widow Killian, to be on Nightline shortly, says she doesn't think so.

1. If two amateur Freepers can poke 20 holes in these documents in a few hours, working only from crappy .pdf files, the CBS "experts" should have seen the inconsistencies well before the end of the "six weeks" they had to study the originals.
2. CBS has refused to name their source or their "experts".
Can you spell "cover up" ?

Back in the '70's, Esquire magazine did just that. They took a bunch of bums and did before and after shots. Totally mind-blowing. The sleaziest even looked the best when groomed and haberdashed. Hopefully, Dan is about to make the same journey in reverse...

Question:
This has probably been mentioned a million times, but . . . in the Salon.com article about Barnes they say:
"The video of Barnes was filmed by Todd Phelan and Mike Nicholson, organizers of a political group called Austin4Kerry. Phelan is currently an organizer for the Travis County Democrats."
This is from the Washington Post (04/04/2001):
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A34557-2001Apr3?language=printer
"Dan Rather, the longest-serving and most outspoken of the major network news anchors, recently served as the star attraction at a Democratic Party fundraiser.
Donors paid as much as $1,000 for a private evening in Austin with the CBS newsman, according to an invitation obtained by The Washington Post. Rather's appearance at the March 21 gathering generated about $20,000 for the Travis County Democratic Party -- and will undoubtedly provide ammunition to critics who have long accused Rather of leaning to the left.
Are they the same organizations?
To: MrChips
So, where does the AP come in? I had heard that the AP sued for release of the documents. Different documents. AP sued for official records...and the Pentagon found some of Bush's flight records -- which are routinely destroyed within two years. But, in this case, were kept. Nothing damaging.
CBS obtained some purportedly "private records" that had been kept by Bush's TANG commander, a LtCol Killian.
These were mildly damaging. But they also appear to have been forgeries. Rather amateurish ones, at that.
They were first spotted on FR. The case was built by Buckhead, Howlin, TankerKC, et al, last night. The blogs began picking it up this AM. This evening, Fox, ABC and the Washington Post are rubbing Rather's nose in it.
