"Are the CBS National Guard Documents Fake?" (Font expert says gut tells him its a fabrication!)
In DC Journal ^ | 9/9/04

Posted on 09/09/2004 12:41:23 PM PDT by The G Man

After contacting several experts, a rather notable Forensic Document Examiner named Dr. Peter Bouffard took the time to examine a pdf of the documents and perform an initial visual analysis of their authenticity. Dr. Bouffard has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, but got involved in forensic examination of typefaces after working in “graphics” with NCR until 1973 and taking a two-year Certification Program in Document Examination at Georgetown University. After completing the program, he became specifically interested in typewriter classification and went to work for a prosecutor’s crime lab in Lake County, Ohio.

Using something called the Haas Atlas, the definitive collection of various typefaces, Mr. Bouffard (and other forensic document examiners) examined the veracity of various documents for over 30 years. Beginning in 1988, Mr. Bouffard hired a programmer to write a computer database program that catalogues the nearly 4,000 typefaces that appear in the Haas Atlas. This computer program is now a forensic standard that is sold as a companion to the Haas Atlas by American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE).

What did Dr. Bouffard think of the documents?

First, the necessary caveats:

• The pdf document is of poor quality. It seems to have been copied and recopied several times, blurring letter characteristics.

• Also, certain types of analysis can only be done on the original documents, which don’t seem to be available, even to CBS.

So Dr. Bouffard is very clear that his analysis is not 100% positive. That being said …

“It’s just possible that this might be a Times Roman font, which means that it would have been created on a computer. It’s very possible that someone decided to create this document on a computer... I’ve run across this situation before … my gut is this could just well be a fabrication.”

I can't figure out why CBS allowed this hit piece to see the light of day anyway because of the dossier against Barnes. The guy told a different story under oath in a deposition - so do you trust a guy who says he lied under oath? Barnes is a big time fundraiser for Kerry and part of the campaign. Barnes is out of politics because of a scandal and was caught in another scandal just a few years ago. The forged documents just make a suspect story even more suspect.

Rather's blind hatred of Republicans led to this very smelly piece of urinalism.

Wow, what a rollercoaster ride folks! After the uplifting experience of the RNC and corresponding rise in poll numbers for our President, the news of the past two days has really brought me down. Now with the increasing likelihood that these documents are forgeries, that should result in a MSM backfire.

When I first saw the reports of these being forgeries, I thought to myself "Why would someone be so stupid to do this?". And then it sank in (with help of another freeper) - Clinton. His cronies floated these documents to CBS, who were only too eager to run with it. The Clintons knew that the documents wouldn't hold up to intense scrutiny, and sure enough, it looks like this will end up being a net plus for the President. Kerry goes down in flames, and Hildabeast enters the batters box for '08.

Does anyone recall the time they had an American voice actor do a fake Iraqi translator accent for Saddam's interview?

Yes I do. That time, they just looked stupid. This time they look positively criminal.

Could be, but then SeeBS must provide the "original" copy.

And quickly, because how would they prove that they haven't been forging another one, but this time in Courier?

The election is OVER and Dan Rather's career ends on the low note he'll be remembered for and rightly so.

And now the S U X Nightly news with co-anchors Dan Rather and Peter Arnett reporting from a telephone booth in the Poughkeepsie K-Mart parking lot.

You do not go to all the trouble of making it look authentic then. The only reason you go to this:

---• Next, Dr. Bouffard began entering individual characters in an attempt to match them to the remaining fonts that were available on proportional spacing typewriters of that era, focusing on numbers. Thus far, one character stood out, the number “4.” In the document provided by CBS News, the number 4 does not "have a foot" and has a “closed top,” which is indicative of Times New Roman, a font exclusive to more modern computer word processing programs. * He looked through old papers he's written, and noted that he's come up against the inconsistency of the "4" several previous times with forgeries that attempt to duplicate old proportional spaced documents with a computer word processing program.---

..kind of trouble is because you intend to deceive.

Then they should have no difficulty providing the "original" they worked with for impartial examination. I say call Gil Grissom.

I don't know if this has already been done; if not, let me be the first:

John "Forged" Kerry

I think Effin's campaign is about to reach crush depth...

Now that is an interesting word. I believe that I will hang on to that one.

The story I read on another thread is that Rather had to lobby for this segment to air, but after much begging, execs would only let it go on the Wednesday show, not Sunday. Now this.

Dan Rather commits fraud on network television. Will Jennings and Brokaw mention it????? I'm confident Hume will included it in the FNC news show as soon as we have sufficient confirmation of the fraud.

Leftist desperation.

Rather's blind hatred of Republicans...

His snearing visage during the Watergate scandal would make Tad Devine look quite pleasant by comparison.

It is no trouble... it only takes 5 seconds...

You do it because it is what your producer asked you to do...

You do it just like you re-recorded the voice of Saddams translator because you didn't like the sound of the original...

I am just saying the story should be: Are these images of the original cause if they are (proceed with the rest)

The story and the documents are still up on the CBS News website as of 3:20pm central time. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of the meetings they must be having about this right now.

I haven't heard anything about the possibility of forged documents on tv yet. I am hoping Brit Hume can get this document expert to do an interview today.

The dems have been consumed with the Swift Boat Vets being their problem, not their candidate. This is going to be fun to watch play out...

Kudos to Byron York for his article on all the hours Bush logged flying in the guard.
