Russian vow 'a threat to everyone'

Sep 8 2004

Russia's threat to target "terrorists anywhere" is a danger to Britain, Europe and the rest of the world, a top Chechen separatist based in the UK has warned.

Akhmed Zakayev said the vow meant Russia may try to assassinate Chechens wherever they are, regardless of international boundaries.

And he warned that sent out a "very disturbing signal to all civilised countries".

Mr Zakayev, an envoy for Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, also rejected claims by Russia that he should face a renewed extradition attempt following the Beslan school massacre.

The separatist, who has been granted asylum, spoke out after Colonel General Yuri Baluyevsky, chief of the Russian General Staff. reasserted the country's right to strike at terrorists the world over.

Mr Zakayev said: "I think these are probably not empty threats, in fact they have already shown in practice that that is the way they do things.

"It is a very disturbing signal they are sending for all civilised countries.

"There are lots of Chechens all over the world and of course they talk freely about how dissatisfied they are with Putin's policies.

"To Putin, that makes them international terrorists. It is a warning to other European countries that Russia may come and carry out an assassination on your soil at any moment."

In February this year, two Russian agents assassinated Chechen rebel leader Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev in a car bomb attack in Qatar.

I'm a simple guy, don't know much about the ways of the wide world outside my bunker. Can anyone tell me why the Russian Army engineers don't just break out all of their bulldozers/earthmovers and dig a 20' moat all around the "breakaway republic of chechnya", ring it with razor wires and install one gate? Give the good citizens of Chechnya (read Christians and Jews) ten days to get out. At the end of the ten days, slam that gate shut and give Spetznaz responsibility for containing them. Nobody in, nobody out. You're on your own, you filthy savages.

With slight modification, I approve: "Akhmed Zakayev said the vow meant Russia may try to assassinate Chechen terrorists and their supporters wherever they are, regardless of international boundaries."

How certain our you that the individual in question is a terrorist? Are all Chechens terrorists? I sure hope not, because by that logic, all Iraqis, all Turks, and all Kuwaitis are as well. You'd better be darned sure before you start calling for mass assassinations. If you believe as I do, there will not be 72 virgins when we pass on, but there certainly will be a final judgement by God Almighty!

My only comment is : When is Putin going to state.Putin has my vote and support to begim immediately if not sooner.

And it should be a promise, not a threat.

This guy is a Chechnyan terrorist...we should never have granted him asylum...he may have had something to do with the attack on the children...here's hoping he has a very serious accident very soon.

Properly, there are Chechen patriot / rebels, who abide by the rules of war. Russia may kill them on the battlefield.

Alternatively, there are also Chechen terrorist / war criminals. Russia may kill them wherever and whenever they are located.

Either way, Chechens prone to legal revolution or illegal terrorism are liable to be killed by Russia.

Chechens allied with Moscow should be spared and protected.

Let the games begin.

That idea works for me and I suspect for Mr. Putin also. Those left would eventually turn on each other - could be a pay-per-view reality show.

In my opinion , this can only help Bush. It appears that other countries(Russia) now understand that the terrorists are mean people that care about nothing but their agenda.
Anyone that will kill an innocent child (and one child was reported to be shot more than 40 times in the back) does not deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I think that Dr.Rice was correct when she said Bush will one day be seen as a hero for what he did. He made a hard decision. Now the Russian's understand that you must fight with fire. There is no sensitivity training required for this mission.

Glad you noticed that, because I see no civilized nature in killing innocent children at school.

Maybe this is another reason why Putin put his hand out to Israel. Besides learning how to better protect his country, he could learn how to assassinate this terrorist from a distance. Just like Israel took care of the Olympic terrorists.
