Forty years ago today.
It gave the opportunity for the nation to see for the first time Ronald Reagan as the "Great Communicator" as he gave his "A Time For Choosing" speech.
That speech, broadcast on the Sunday before the November 3 election, had a larger audience by far than the "daisy" ad of LBJ's on its single airing, even though it probably didn't change many votes. Most who watched it were already committed to Goldwater.
It's difficult to imagine, I'm sure, for "Bush conservatives," but Goldwater and Reagan were really not that close, having more than differences in style to set them apart. Goldwater was fiercely anti-union, for one. Reagan had been president of the Screen Actors Guild before he knew better.
Nevertheless, to the Eastern Establishment at least (both parties included), Goldwater and Reagan were way off to the right and therefore unacceptable as presidential candidates. In '64, they ran Rockefeller, then Scranton in a belated attempt to head off the Goldwater stampede; in '80 it was George H. W. Bush, and we know what that brought us.
Wow - I caught myself. Having been born after this aired and not having seen it, I thought Daisy referred to a Daisy BB gun for a few seconds. Gives the script a totally different meaning.
I imagine it was very effectie imagery.
This is the advertisement that cost Senator Barry Goldwater the 1964 Presidential election, and in so doing arguably changed the course of United States history
Yep - They voted in a MASS MURDERER - L. B. Johnson (democrat) - He went to war for his enjoyment and self-pleasure from his sense of absolute power!
That was what he had been trying for years in Texas to achieve - murdering all those who opposed him there.
I agree with you in that, the Swifties coverage of the Fulbright testimony by kerry was the most damning commericial yet seen. Even though it was dramatic, compelling, well scripted, and powerful argument; it was most powerful due to its strict observance of the TRUTH!

I agree about the respect that Goldwater deservedly attained among liberals, because in their hearts they knew he was an honest and decent man. They knew that even as they reviled him. But they did wait until his political career was safely buried before they began to praise him.
How about the dumbest campaign ad ever? The current kerry ad that I've never seen, but hear all the time. When it comes on all you hear is President Bush's voice talking about the economy. It ends with Bush's voice saying over and over, "steady and strong, steady and strong." It's a great ad for......Bush. (I listen to TV as I freep so I don't see the ad, but hear it)
I thought the Kerry on Iraq ad was far better. Daisy plays to your emotions which might have been the most effective ting to do in the 60.
But the Kerry on Iraq is much more devistating.
"They told me that if I voted for Goldwater we'd have riots in the cities and half a million troops in VietNam. They were right, I voted for Goldwater and we got half a million troops in VietNam and riots in the cities."

If memory serves, and we're talking about a loooong time ago, this imagery may have gotten its start from a Ray Bradbury short story.
Bradbury was in the news recently, too. The author of Fahrenheit 451 was not at all pleased at the gross rudeness of Michael Moore in usurping and vandalizing his famous title. He declined to take legal action because he did not want to give MM publicity.

Goldwater lost because the country was gushing with sympathy for JFK. Johnson played the "I'm gonna carry on Kennedy's vision" crap to the hilt. He did the usual RAT trick of promising everything to everyone. He lied about what he would do in Vietnam.
LBJ's body should be dug up, mutilated, and every Vietnam Vet allowed to file by and p*** on it.
Still set the presedent for negative campaigning and we all know the same party continues it today.
Ha ha! I'm glad someone else noticed this! I usually leave the room during commercial breaks. I heard President Bush's voice making good sense, and thought it was a great ad. The third time it was on I saw it was a Kerry ad showing empty (obsolete) factories.
Did you see the MoveOn.org ad? There's a snarly looking woman I immediately perceived to be a humorless 'rat. She's going on and on about her clients leaving her, but she doesn't care. Then she says she's a Republican for Kerry (as IF!) and doesn't care if her last client leaves her because of it. THEN she curls her lip and snarls at the camera! Yep, that ought to turn the tide for Kerry, NOT!
