Secretary of State Colin Powell disapproved on Tuesday of an Israeli helicopter attack on a Hamas training camp in Gaza. "Retaliation is not a solution" to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he said.
Powell said the way out of the conflict is to implement a road map for peacemaking proposed jointly by the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia.
Unfortunately, Powell said at a news conference, Palestinian leaders have not taken control of all Palestinian security groups to crack down on violence.
Powell has called in the past for uprooting Hamas, the Palestinian terror group that has claimed responsibility for bombings in Israel, including two attacks on buses last week in Beersheba that killed 16 and wounded over 100.
But his remarks Tuesday suggested he looked to the Palestinian Authority rather than Israel to put the group out of business.
Asked about Israel's raid on the Hamas training camp in Gaza that killed at least 15 and wounded 30 others, Powell said, "I don't think they (retaliatory raids) are very helpful. The situation is very tragic."
He again praised an offer by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to remove all 7,500 Jews who live there and the troops that protect them from Gaza as well a handful of Jewish settlements on the West Bank as an opportunity to get started on peacemaking.
Powell called on Palestinian leaders to respond with measures designed to improve security.
Israeli retaliation "is not a solution to the problems we face in the region," he said.
Get Colon Bowel and the lib-dem Klintoon filth out of Foggy Bottom, and drain the swamp. He's a stinking RINO and part of The Enemy Within.
Anyone in DC listening?
That is nothing new. It would be new if the PA was finally recognized as a terror group.
Do you constantly pet a dog that bites or do you take action?
In theory, Powell has a point, in practice it has no place at this time.
Bombs away Israel! Save yourself, you can't depend on anyone better than you to fight your battles.
Amen ! Powell's got to go.
Wake up datura, digger is right, this is the GWB State Dept and they're vital in the fight against terror. There's nothing to indicate a Secretary of State Gingrich is in our future, or North. Recognizing that doesn't equate with supporting Kerry.
Think so?
Attacking the terrorists who just attacked you is wrong? Preemption, and this isn't preemption, the policy of a fool? If Powell's right, our attacks on Afghanistan and certainly Iraq were immoral actions. Right out of the Kerry playbook. Israel should have gone to the UN, it's a criminal matter after all, just as GWB should have.
Dubya needs to tell Powell to SHUT UP.
The people in the State Dept. don't seem to have a problem defending US actions in Iraq and other places, even at times when they seem to be like IDF actions, so I don't see how they could not be made to stop condemning IDF actions.
The U.S military just killed 100 terrorists in Falloujah. Perhaps Colon Bowell could practice what he preaches and demand our military stop "retaliation" for terrorist attacks. After all, its not a solution to the violence. Let the terrorists in Falloujah keep the peace. I just wish Bowell would shut the hell up and go away; he makes us look like self-righteous poseurs in the War On Terror with his stupid comments!
No, they don't. I'm presuming a Republican administration doesn't endorse a blatent double standard, though I admit I've nothing to base it on.
Combine this with the State Department's call for diplomacy with Chechnya and this guy should be taken behind the wood shed to administer some re-education.

No. But that's not what Powell said. He said it was "tragic" and "not very helpful." The Bush policy which Powell has implemented to the great benefit of Israel assigns to the US a role of broker. Under this policy, Israel has been systematically dismantling the terror organizations and has isolated the Arafat leadership. The policy has sought new Pallie leaders who might be reasonable negotiating partners. Putting it in the context of the "road map" has helped neutralize Israel's most implacable international enemies. All I'm saying is that this latest statement is no different than dozens of others made over the last several years. And it leaves Israel with the green light to defend itself. The Bush policy is good for America, good for Israel, and (as far as I can tell) supported by the great majority of Israelis.
i'm so tired of no one saying the emperor might be a little bit naked.. Bush isn't perfect.. why can't we say that here instead of "oooo look at how clever he is....he knows exactly what he's doing..."
Sigh...shut up, Colin. I also heard on Fox News tonight that the US State Dept is suggesting that Putin not retaliate for that most horrible massacre but rather negotiate with the "separatists." Please, Mr. President, clean that house next term.
"Powell is just a bone for the Left, nothing more..."
It appears that the bone in question is the jawbone of an ass.
Newsweek (yeah, I know), had an IN/OUT graphic in last week's issue about a second-term Bush cabinet- out at SOS:Colin Powell, in, Condi Rice... or someone else... Jeez, I can't remember details from B.S. sources.
Dr. Savage, I agree whole heartedly.
Abu Powell spouting shi'ite again..
