I will bow out after this, because it is certainly not an area of my expertise, but here are some posts to one thread. There was another thread today that was even closer to the content of the current thread and had similar replies. I couldn't quickly locate it. I don't know what the right answer is on this issue - that is, was Kerry in violation of the UCMJ in 1971?

Maybe he has a loophole for being awol, but that doesn't excuse him for the treason. and violation which technicly prevent him from even holding a senate seat.

It does not matter what was expected of VietNam vets. Apparently, missing a National Guard meeting and making it up later was pretty common in Bush's unit.
What matters is did Kerry live up to THE LETTER of his obligation. They started this with whether or not Bush lived up to the letter not the spirit of his obligation. That is their standard and Kerry better have met it or this will be an issue.

The DD-215 is a form which is used to correct the DD-214, which is his separation from active duty.
Many times, awards are made "after the fact". For instance, my DD-214 from my service in Korea qualifies me for four awards. Since that time, at least six awards to which I am qualified have been added.
I didn't ask for a DD-215 but if I had, many if not all would have been added to it.
I suspect that the Unit Citation was awarded after he was separated but included the time that he served in the unit. You might want to investigate it, but it will probably be a dry hole.
Yeah, I know. My husband just submitted his request for some unit citations that he didn't know about.
In Kerry's case, at least one of them was signed by Richard Nixon. I was just hoping. :)
