Paul Krugman: Feel the hate, fear and loathing in New York Paul Krugman NYT Saturday, September 4, 2004
PRINCETON, New Jersey Paul Krugman 'I don't know where George Soros gets his money," one man said. "I don't know where - if it comes from overseas or from drug groups or where it comes from." George Soros, another declared, "wants to spend $75 million defeating George W. Bush because Soros wants to legalize heroin." After all, a third said, Soros "is a self-admitted atheist; he was a Jew who figured out a way to survive the Holocaust."
The suggestion that Soros, who has spent billions promoting democracy around the world, is in the pay of drug cartels came from Dennis Hastert, the speaker of the House of Representatives, whom the Constitution puts two heartbeats from the presidency. After standing by his remarks for several days, Hastert finally claimed that he was talking about how Soros spends his money, not where he gets it.
The claim that Soros's political spending is driven by his desire to legalize heroin came from Newt Gingrich. And the bit about the Holocaust came from Tony Blankley, editorial page editor of The Washington Times, which has become the Bush administration's de facto house organ.
For many months we've been warned by tut-tutting commentators about the evils of irrational "Bush hatred." Pundits eagerly scanned the Democratic convention for the disease; some invented examples when they failed to find it. Then they waited eagerly for outrageous behavior by demonstrators in New York, only to be disappointed again.
There was plenty of hatred in Manhattan, but it was inside, not outside, Madison Square Garden.

Yeah, Carl is a FReeper, he should clean this up
I wouldn't defend Tony for that comment. Krugman isn't one of my favorite economists, though.
Zell & Arnold have licenses that we average conservatives can't even apply for:
The Democrat License
The Immigrant License
That's why the Press is howling, and the John Johns' are running scared.
Krugman fell into another trap. Time to keep Soros who has been very quiet for the past few months in the news.
In fact, Soros took the bait by responding to Hastert.
It is good to have a person of the NYT explain it to me. Former Jew, huh? Move of lot of H, huh? OK, Paul if you say so, then I'll believe it.
Are we very near the time when McCain-Feingold requires the 527's to shutenzie upenzie?
Dunno.
I thought the cutoff was 60 days before the election, but it doesn't apply to the papers.
I can't imagine that it applies to the internet. And that is where the action is.
Guess one of the lawyers or political junkies on FR will know.
or his casket lowered. God will not always strive with man, and Soros is due for some of God's wrath! I will pray for him as I have for Sadaam.
Hastert issued a clarification and said he did not mean drug cartels (this is people putting their own interpretion on what he said), he meant groups that want to legalize drugs.
I suppose he couldn't see the pure hatred in the steets because he agrees with it.
I don't care what he says in his spin--the mere fact that a super-liberal Dem is putting Soros in play as a mystery man and a billionaire will make some wonder exactly why he's bankrolling Kerry.
Personally, I think Bush ought to 'out' this connection and all the millions Soros is spending. Why?

Zell Miller, who gave the Republican keynote, declared that political opposition is treason . . . But the vitriol also reflects the fact that many of the people at that convention, for all their flag-waving, hate America.
This genocidal totalitarian fanatic can't see the hypocrisy between these two statements.
They want a controlled, monolithic society; they fear and loathe the nation's freedom, diversity and complexity. A racist code-phrase.

Riiiight, if that was love outside, I don't need it.
