Somewhere in France he wanted to study wasn't it but he was refused deferment so volunteered for Navy hoping not to go to Vietnam. This is probably why he keeps going on about Dick Cheney's deferments because he can't stand the fact that Dick Cheney got the deferments and he did not.

Cheney was 26 at the time the draft started. He was also married and the father of two children. The Dems refer to this as "deferments," He was automatically deferred. That's just not the same as ASKING for a deferment, as Kerry did.

My husband served during the Korean war. He was drafted as soon as he graduated from college. That was standard.

The following timeline I have found regarding Dick Cheney's deferments are as follows:-

First US Ground troops sent to Vietnam.

1966 First Daughter born ("deferment" FIVE)

1967 Dick Cheney now a 26 year old married father with a graduate degree is too old to be drafted.
