Shortly after the situation erupted at the scene of the hostage crisis in the North Ossetian town of Beslan, the area around the school was described as chaotic, with one suspected terrorist attacked by the crowd.
A reporter with Britains Sky News described how vigilantes attacked one of the suspected rebels. She said special forces brought out a man on a stretcher and the crowd moved as one and began to attack him.
The soldiers made a token effort to protect him but they have no control, the reporter said.
The chaos is thought to have assisted up to 13 of the hostage-takers to flee the school and hole up in a residential building nearby.
A correspondent from the BBC who is at the scene also called the situation in the streets in the aftermath of the storming as pandemonium.
Television pictures showed scores of bloodied children in a state of undress milling around armored personnel carriers as soldiers provided water and first aid. The sound of gunfire could be heard in the background.
A number of the released hostages have reportedly avoided going to hospital, Gazeta.Ru says, further confusing any attempt at a head count by authorities.
I just saw a report that civilians (mostly former military personnel) armed themselves and assisted the military and police in taking out the terrorists. During WW2, Russian civilians made life absolute heck for the German invaders, sniping at them, blowing up supply convoys, and all other manner of general insurrection.
But he needs to take Rev. Jesse Jackson with him because he is soooo good at negotiating.
Pictures? Any pics? (((:::no:::))) Drat.
The Terrorist, not the suspected rebel (puh-lease), is lucky they didn't do to him what he did to them and their children. Let's hope the rest of the Terrorists are captured and properly punished for their atrocious crimes.
And at least one father was killed trying to save his child.

A friend of mine who I trust has passed along the following information:
Last report I have says its now 19 out of twenty dead. Three more are holed up in the building basement with some hostages, seven are in another building being pounded by tanks and the rest are fleeing through the countryside pursued by local citizens with deer rifles.
**EDIT** its now been reported that the ones who tried to flee across country (now numbered at 13) are holed up in a house, surrounded by local civilians who are shooting the place apart, brick by brick.
Confirmation awaited.
The best-selling deer rifle in Russia is the Tigr, a civilianized version of the Dragunov SVD. Its wickedly accurate.
Good hunting to them.
Slow down and spell check. People letting their emotions run away with them is the cause of most trouble in the world.
I'm with you, Nels.
Okay. I understand it. Perception. Environmental influences. Truth vs. illusion. The illusory nature of the maya. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Now. Anyone who commits an act such as this should be exterminated.
How's that for a moral absolute?
I'd like to give him a whack or two myself, that monster from hell.
Are we to assume from your tag line that you are partial to lynching? ;^)
Better 10 innocent men die rather than 1 guilty man go free.
I would bet they have a great idea which people are the terrorists and which are innocent citizens. Afterall, there were 1000 people in there.
I would hope there will be extreme repercussions - this should not be treated lightly. If they want to see the populace handle international relations, just get the children involved. There will not be trials, there will not be prison terms, there will be no consideration of terrorists' rights. They will be exterminated as soon as possible because there is no rehabilitation for people (?) who would do such.
They need to keep a few alive in order to, ahem, extract information from them about who sent them and where we might find more like them!
No, we will not wait for the courts to handle this should it happen here. Why, half of the court judges are supportive of terrorists and try and give them the rights of citizens.
No, when they chose to kidnap and harm children, all bets are off and they forfeit any rights. We will take care of it locally.
